More HI-NRG?!

HI-NRG?!

Why not. After the recent 80s Bass post I got several messages requesting for more so here goes, another quick peek at London’s Heaven club on a Saturday night in 1984. Take a cab to Charing Cross station at midnight, walk  down Villiers Street, turn right, step under the arches below the station and there you are, ready for the mass of torsos in the dark, the stench of poppers and the thump.

The 80s

80s-5

The 80s

The 80s were about wearing black on black, not exhanging bodily fluids, forgetting about New York and flying to London instead. Grace Jones and Pedro Almodóvar made immense impact. The best fonts were by Neville Brody, seen in magazines like Face and the Arena. From France, Philippe Starck emerged as the new designer god. Communism fell, MTV was born and there was famine in Ethiopia. Nights were spent on watching horror movies in cinemas and ultraviolent Hong Kong gangster films on vhs but people still danced on weekends. Computers took over. Anything else…no, that’s pretty much it.

The sounds? Here’s some of the right stuff in a mix.

I Like Plastic

plastic

Marsha Raven – I Like Plastic

Plastic was big already during the sixties but people first started wearing clothes made from black trash bags during 1976 in Great Britain. This happened both in discos and punk places. Girls could simply just cut three holes into a bag, add a belt and the outfit was ready. Guys had to spend more time, especially when they wanted to impress with plastic trousers.

Marsha Raven’s record was made in 1982 when new wave fashions again embraced the handy and cheap material.

Slow It Down

Modern Rocketry – Homosexuality

World famous researches William H Masters and Virginia E Johnson as well as PH.D. Dr.Mai-Britt Bergström-Walan at the Swedish Institute for Sexual Research who organized the 1976 International Symposium of Sex Education and Therapy in Stockholm and who has appeared in such groundbreaking educational films as The Language Of Love and it’s equally sincere sequels, strongly advocate moderating the rhythm of the movement and slowing it down for more satisfying results. Works in the case of this Modern Rocketry track from 1985, too.

At The Saint

At The Saint

The legendary Saint opened in New York’s East Village in 1980, with a renovation cost of 4.5 million dollars that equals more than 11.5 million today. The djs included Jim Burgess and Roy Thode. In addition to the music, the place offered extreme non-simulated sex shows. Here’s a couple of big tunes from the club spinned under the huge planetarium dome in March 1987, including Jimmy Galvin’s If It Takes A Miracle and the number one track that month The Girl Who Seduced The World by Louie Louie. Check also Raquel Welch moaning on her This Girl’s Back In Town 12″ – could it be it was her doing the same on the L’Animal soundtrack, after all?

Another day Comes Another Day Goes

Kiki Dee – Another Day Comes And Another Day Goes

Long time no hi-nrg, a genre that didn’t age too well. There are exceptions of course and here we may have one by Kiki Dee, a rock singer who used to record with Sir Elton John.
First listed as “Boystown” in Record Mirror, the leading GB weekly covering dance music, hi-nrg music reached it’s high point with Miquel Brown’s anthemic So Many Men So Little Time in 1983, and then gradually faded from the scene. Another Day Comes And Another Day Goes was one of the last shouts, out in 1986. – In the picture, the cavernous interior of Heaven, the ultimate place for this sound during the popper-reeking era. The place is still running.

Rare video — official promo of Sylvester’s “I (Who Have Nothing)”, 1979. Uncommon example of non-camp disco-video.

The Robot Scientists – The Spaced Out Disco Session – May 2010 (Right click to download)

Loads and loads of both cheesy and groovy tracks inside: the main motto here is “Hi-NRG is fun”. It must be one of their very finest DJ sets so far IMHO.

A Woman Like That

This is some top Canadian Italo Disco cheese, full of breaks ala Michael Sembello. Fairly unknown tune too, or so it seems. Thanks to disco1999 and kundalini for the heads-up.

Night Shift

Night Shift

Den Haan – Night Shift (2008)

The Glasgow-based band Den Haan produced this funny tune for the underground label Dissident. They keep a pure old school italo style just adding their own electro touch.

Thanks to the Keytars and Violins blog for sharing.

Stay tuned for their forthcoming “Release The Beast
(listen on their profile)

Physical

Primadonna – Physical (1990)
(Listen to the full track)

Stefania Dal Pino met the producer Giorgio Dolce and formed Primadonna in the mid 80’s. They released a few singles and “Physical” is the last one.

A modern italo sound with her sweet and sometime rocky voice. It might sounds cheasy for some but for me it’s charming (can’t explain).
