Put The Freeze On

bmkhan.jpg A great track released on Alfie Silas’s first album: Alfie. (Unfortunately) The only song with a strong electronic layer on the album. Too bad, I like this specific one.

Don’t Chop Banana

It appears I’m unable to grasp the depth and range of the lyrics to their full extent, however the instrumental part sounds good enough.

The Runner

r-530065-1144176151.jpeg

The Three Degrees – The Runner (1978)

The Three Degrees are a female Philly soul and disco vocal musical group formed in 1963. The members changed many times. (more informations)

After a few disappointments the album “New Dimension” arrived right in time for a renewal: new producer with Giorgio Moroder and new label with Ariola.

First the single “Giving Up, Giving In” hits the top of the club charts. Then a second single “The Runner” came to complete the real success.

Space Woman

168-image_large.jpg

This very groovy track’s been first released with the Herman’s Rocket moniker, then under the Venus Gang guise a few years later; but don’t be fooled, it’s really the exact same song. Whatever its name, the bassline is quite hypnotic.

Herman’s Rocket / Venus Gang – Space Woman (1977 / 1981)

Interesting trivia, this is in fact a ‘spacey’ cover version of a funky song released only one year earlier.

When You Wake Up

candi-staton.jpg

A very funky Candi Staton‘s tune from 1979, along with a slightly edited and bouncy House version made in 2006.

Spaced Out

spaced-out.jpg Catchy bassline, funky guitar riff, silly lyrics, high-pitched chorus, robotic chipmunk vocals… what else do you want?

Pure Energy – Spaced Out (1983)

(thanks to blackberrie for the disco-very)

BTW, did you know that two of the Pure Energy team, i.e. Curtis Hudson and John Benitez, are also involved in Madonna’s first LP? The first one has even written Holiday. Neat, huh?

Hand-picked Funk: 1980-1985 (and a bit of Disco and Garage too) – Part 1

Here’s a quick selection of a few 80s funky tracks you MUST play when you invite me 😀 A common feature is the use of a massive groovy bassline… and sometimes quite a catchy vocal loop.
