Heavy Hitter et al.

bnhh588618716-58178617176881136817681188768

They’re all clustered together on this post because they’re obviously made using the same recipe. Most of the production team is the same.

Karen Diggs – Infatuation (1982) – and no, this is not an alternative version of Plastic Doll.

Barbara Norris – Strategy (1983)

Karen Diggs – Congratulations (1983)

The last one is my favourite from the lot, and unquestionably the most well known – what a catchy hook, everything’s in the name:

Wake Up And Move “Funky”

erwuamf688179819819981-6818117-818468

No arpeggio from outer space this time, nor any minimalist lyrics sung with a thick Italian accent and quickly laid on a cheap Casio beat… it’s just something “funky”, and kitsch. The forced falsetto voice and the “wow wow” in the talk box are priceless.

Eddy Rosemond – Wake Up And Move “Funky” (1979)

It’s just been added to the radio database today, along with two rare and mysterious killer tracks, one sung in Italian and the other one in French.

I Wanna Piece Of The Action

kidiwpota65117616738671387168

K.I.D. – I Wanna Piece Of The Action (1982)

Behind K.I.D. hides Geoff Bastow, an impressively good library musician, who also produced a few movie soundtracks at one time too. G.Bastow is actually renowned for having  participated in a bunch of successful records, such as Amanda Lear‘s and Munich Machine‘s (mind the vocoder work and the syncopated bassline in the track in preview). He also had his own personal share of fame though, notably with the first K.I.D.’s LP: Don’t Stop.

3,000,000 Synths

cj3ms68177817381781-1531 Stupid trivia: the counting voice one can hear in the song actually indicates the pattern index (bar number) from the music score sequence.

Secret Sunday Lover

Ali Love

1gnition – Secret Sunday Lover (Greg Wilson Edit)

This one’s a classic hit single but the different mixes are soOo efficient to me that I can’t resist to share the groove!

1st release in 2007 produced by Ignition a UK  based band formed by Ali Love & Marcus J Knight with Eon including Greg Wilson‘s epic mix.

Ali Love – Secret Sunday Lover

2nd version appears on Ali Love’s album and single in a dirty style and another juicy mix by Sébastien Léger turning to acid.

YMO Tribute

87520050521651475312a98f5463.jpg

3 great tracks, from different eras and in different styles, covering some Yellow Magic Orchestra‘s tracks (see here).

Greg Phillinganes – Behind The Mask (1985)
Reportedly, this specific tune was once thought to be included in Michael Jackson‘s Off The Wall but it didn’t end up that way. The album keyboard player, G. Phillinganes, resang the vocal part and ultimately used it for a record of his own.

Ken Ishii – Firecracker (2001)

Electric Youth – Replay (Demo) (2008)

Sneaky Sound System – When We Were Young (Breakbot Remix) (2008)

Yet another great Breakbot remix, full of Braxe-like synthesizers.

Captain Future

181293467_b8a5022738_o.jpg Every thirty or twentysomething will easily remember this old anime, named differently according to the country that broadcast the show (e.g. Captain Future, Capitan Futuro or Capitaine Flam).

It is worth noting that every European country had its own version of the OST. While, in France for example, Jean-Jacques Debout (see previous post) recorded it, Christian Bruhn released his own version for the German market, in 1980.

Christian Bruhn – Gefahr
Christian Bruhn – Vor dem Start
Christian Bruhn – Durch den Weltraum nach Hause

This OST spawned countless remixes and cover versions. Some are o.k., others are really bad.

The original:
Christian Bruhn – Feinde greifen an
The remake:
Phil Fuldner – The Final (Chronovisor Mix) (1998)

The original:
Christian Bruhn – Space – Wind
The remake:
Wildchild – All Together (1996) – I should still have my Mokum T-shirt somewhere, cleanly packed…

Beyond

RAH Band – Beyond (1978)

It’s just one more groovy odyssey out of the galaxy, extract from the album “The Crunch & Beyond” by Richard Hewson under the name of RAH Band.

Their first hit single “The Crunch” incorporated some jazzy and rock elements in the synthpop genre, or maybe the opposite… (more…)

Start Something

Morten Sorensen – Start Something (2008)

It’s a new beginning. Back in the time with Morten Sorensen a Norvegian producer and a NY disco lover who released his first EP “Start Something” for the label Tirk.

This tune sampled a song by the popular band Chic that appears on the “Tongue In Chic” LP:

Soraya

Art by Hannes Bok

Soraya – If (1978)

Soraya – Soraya Funk

This is a project based upon the mysterious singer Soraya Kaci. Several people involved but the most famous are Massiera & Torelli (Venus Gang), half-brothers and producers of these excellent tracks. Not much to say about it, just listen and enjoy!
