Feast For Flies

national

Mikko Saarela – Kärpästen Juhlat (Feast for Flies)

Here’s a poke in the ribs for those waving flags in squares in patriotic frenzy, ready to fight against immigrants, the EU or whatever they currently hate. Of course the 1981 track gets it’s message across only to the very small percentage of the world’s population who understand the Finnish language but trust me, we got enormous amounts of morons here who should give it a listen. – not a bad dance track in any case.

Lola Martinez – Persigueme

Vamos a la discoteca con senorita Martinez, con los sintetizadors, con un ritmo mundial! A slightly slower version of the Amanda Lear classic has all the right noises. Big thanks to Arnie’s Love for the copy.

Music flows warmly like artifical sunlight thru the Farfisa 200 machine into your head. We have two cover versions here, played with that instrument. One Possessed is actually Michael Sembello’s Maniac.

Peru – Caves

Like Orientalist subjects in western art in general, exoticism in disco was associated with fantasies of opulence and barbaric splendour. During the seventies the tracks were in the expected orchestral mould, such as the previous post illustrates. The trend continued during the early 80s when Arabic themes were interpreted with synths, finding fans in the New Romantic movement. These examples are from 1983, made in Holland.

Haruomi Hosono – Funiculi Funiculà

An obvious role model for August Darnell’s Kid Creole, Harumi Hosono realesed a series of mock-exotica albums during the seventies, beginning with Tropical Dandy in 1975. He then joined the Yellow Magic Orchestra and in 1982 put out a solo record containing this delightfully demented version of the old opera tune.

D.C LaRue – Into The Ozone

Lou Christie, a guest vocalist on this excellent D.C LaRue track from his 1981 Star Baby album, sings he does not want to go into the ozone. The last time I was there Sandra Bullock was zigzagging around using a fire extinguisher in sharp clear resolution and delivering a deliriously mawkish monoloque to a dead child. Obviously the ozone is no place to go.

Space Entry

inseminoid

Sammy Burdson – Space Entry

You can have too much money or tattoos or be too thin but you can never have enough space disco records. Again, there’s no real relation between the music and the image, except for the title of the track and the British film’s horrific space entry main setpiece.
