Special message to all who are Disco

bday2015_1

Ben Thomas – Sooleymon

Midnight Movers Unltd – Follow The Wind pt 1.

Face it. You’re no saint so indulge to the max in your vices at least once a year. In the evening of 16th of January A.D. 2015, give in to gluttony, lust and greed and celebrate with us all that is excessive, over-the-top and brilliant in the music we love, for hours and hours. Italo, funk, disco and beyond. Rare tracks and anthems. It’ll all be there to really wallow in, from exotic, sophisticated hothouse flowers to indescribable, sick sonic funghi from hell. From deep powerful vocals by mighty Divas to the flimsiest sighs from young girls who look like they’re sixteen but act like they’re twenty-one. No holds barred. Top tunes from a top lineup. The event will be re-broadcast on the 17th in case it’ll all become too much for you – though of course too much of a good thing is the best thing ever.

Abu Ali

abualiZiad Rahbani – Abu Ali

There is something so absurdly discouraging in living in Finland in November that you should definitely try it. Anyone can lose hope and enthusiasm of better tomorrow in this endless darkness. It feels like escapism is de rigueur to survive. This dreamy lysergic soundscape from 1978 (Lebanon/Greece) is my drug of choice. I want to escape to those dark warm nights of late August. Maybe a weekend with the chosen few at the cottage. Psychedelic light projections in the forest. Sauna all the night. Quality absinthe and talk, talk, talk. Dancing to the full version of Abu Ali at 5.37 ante meridiem. Only 270 days.

Stou

stou1Γιώργος Θεοδωράκης – Stou

“When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” Hunter S. Thompson once phrased. Repetitious tribal beats of this morning music classic will eventually ease unnecessary tensions and you’ll be dancing even if lying still on the floor. Plays well with Le vieux de la montagne.

?!

0742c051081180a2e800baf0598c0245Alexandre Gradski – ?!

Greetings from the amazing city of Tartu, Estonia! Looking for some action? It’s obvious to start from Rüütli for food and drinks. You want something else? Talk to the friendly locals to find the underground. They’ll guide you towards Lai. First you might find irresistibly delicious crêpes at Päris Pariis, but it was action you wanted? Check Zavood to make new friends and then it’s time to go down the Lai. There’s suspicious looking alley after Uus Teater. Follow the light into the darkness and you’ll find the legendary Genialistide Klubi. To my eyes and ears GenKlubi seemed custom made for our kind of disco sound with the right amount of patina, psychedelic projections and most important – the right people. There wasn’t disco dj’s last weekend, but I bet someone has played Alexandre Gradski’s amazing ?! (USSR, 1981) there. After you’ve danced yourself to the other dimension it’s time to check the mysterious cathedrals with those friendly locals. Repeat next weekend.

Elektra

elektra 1Zdenka Kovacicek – Elektra

First time I heard this I felt unreal warmth and consolation. A tune so amazingly good it feels like you could program your dreams into desired directions. It’s impossible to think that I could ever loose that connection with this tune, even though I’ve heard it about 3214 times (Yugoslavia, 1978).

Voci Nella Citta’ Delle Donne

felllini picLuis Bacalov – Voci Nella Citta’ Delle Donne

It’s always delightful to see and hear Soccio’s classic disco cut The Visitors in Fellini’s La Città Delle Donne (1980). For some reason The Visitors is not featured on the OST, but please do take the OST with you next time you’re digging. My favorite track is Voci Nella Citta’ Delle Donne with mysterious chants and things cosmic. Goes well into art crowds.

Sandokan

sandokan

Guido e Maurizio de Angelis – Sandokan

This pirate flute madness is coming from the italian TV show Sandokan. Sandokan is a fictional pirate legend also known as I pirati della Malesia. The music is by Guido e Maurizio de Angelis from ’76. Maybe a bit over the top, but isn’t that how we like it?

L’Antico Castagno – Sciack Sciuck Seghis

Sounds from uncharted regions of the mind exposing integrative levels of consciouness. Carlo experimented with this at Camp Cosmic, allowing those present to undergo intense spiritual illuminations induced by the rhythms, an effect similar to that produced by fantasy-liberating substances, hypnosis, meditation, prayer, or free association during psychoanalysis.

Disconcerto

Alex Cima – Disconcerto

Peter Fonda has owned a MV Agusta F4 1000 which might have been a better travelling companion than that washing machine. Hard to tell, I haven’t tried either. Meanwhile I’ve been trippin’ with this classic for hours now (Germany, 1979).

Be Quite

Yan Tregger – Be Quite
