Roberto does the Freak

Robert Delgado – Le Freak

A surprising cover of the Chic hit from 1978. The image of the sleeve is not from the Jamaican Disco lp the track is on but it had to be posted anyway as it’s too perfect.

“Have you heard about the new dance craze
Listen to us, I’m sure you’ll be amazed
Big fun to be had by everyone
It’s up to you, it surely can be done
Young and old are doing it, I’m told
Just one try, and you too will be sold
It’s called Le Freak, they’re doing it night and day
Allow us, we’ll show you the way
Ah, freak out!”

Utube and other sources mistakenly pass Saturday Night Fever-inspired line dances off as the Freak. The Freak was actually a dance craze that involved Egyptian-style hand moves over the head, meaning both hands moved to one side on beat one and to the other on beat two. Knees were twisted the same way. In fact when the dance first appeared people thought what they were seeing on the floors was a revival of the Twist from the sixties. The Rock Freak was a bit different. Think yourself of a bell hanging. The head stays in place. Place both hands weightlifter-style in front of you palms up, and bent your knees. Start swinging the hands and the knees both to the right on beat one and to the left on beat two. Both versions can be done either solo or facing a partner. With a partner you were supposed to grind together as close and as lewdly as possible, of course.

Witchunt

Dezro Orchestra – Witchunt

Ominous fast banger from 1975, b-side of the floating Reflections which is not half bad either.

Magnifique !

Charisma – Magnifique (1979)

One of the cosmicest sci-fi disco pieces unheard on this blog. I can’t believe it !

For those who don’t know yet little advice: just let yourself  high ! An Anthony Monn‘s production just like O.R.S. (Orlando Riva Sound) or Amanda Lear amongst others.

I Wanna Be With You

Texico – I Wanna Be With You

France 1978. This seems basically to be the instrumental Phil Dufix cult fave with additional sleazy vocals. The album also contains Texico Special which is more of the same, sans vocals.

Hideki Disco Special

Hideki – Hideki Disco Special

Japan 1978. Note the quick snatch of Y.M.C.A at one point, Hideki had a massive hit with it on his home ground.

Chrisland

Chrisland – Angela Angel

Not too surprisingly this French album side long track remains one of the few disco records with lyrics focusing on heroin addiction, scarred arms and underage sex.

Dancing Easy

Danny Williams – Dancing Easy

GB 1977. Extremely belatedly here’s one of the absolutely most anthemic melodies from the 70’s, the MARTINI AD TUNE, done lounge disco. The beige carpeting, the stainless steel & leather furniture, the suave guy in his turtleneck, the girls in their turbans and harem pants, it’s all here in one definitive sonic package.

Voli Tu Volo Anch’io

Jean Paul & Angelique – Voli Tu Volo Anche’io

As hippies explore their inner world, music guides them along in their quest for meaning. This 1978 song seems to be simply about sex, though.

Magic Carpet Ride

1979_Citroen_CX_intBuffalo – Magic Carpet Ride

Thanks for the invitation – it’s an honor to be in! My first post combines two of my favorite addictions from which I never wish to be cured: obscure disco vinyls and the impossibly seductive interior of the first generation Citroën CX. Connoisseurs designer classic is ready to take you for a magic carpet ride. Soundtrack provided by Buffalo (featuring Peter Vee) with a dancefloor friendly version of a Steppenwolf classic.

You can call me Mister Ritmo

As we say in Russia: the lad has said – the lad has done. It was not so easy as I thought in the beginning…

So, at first it was like that. Now, when Randi doesn’t sing, but only ecstatically shouts, mock disco-rock schlager transmuted into experience of disco-climax (at least, as I hear it).
