CAOBA a.k.a. GRUPO CAOBA (GUATEMALA)

Rene Gruau (Caoba)

It is very gratifying to see how the diversity of the Disco music phenomenon impacted even in some of the unlikely places on this planet. The contributions to the genre coming from Guatemala are practically nonexistent. The autochthonous music in this small country from Central America (with a 40% of indigenous population) is strongly influenced by the Maya roots, which are rarely amalgamated with foreign rhythms. Caoba (a.k.a. Grupo Caoba) was a Rara Avis in that specific region, and not much is known about the band. They deliver us some interesting versions of classic Disco numbers (included in their one and only known album from 1977 on Polydor), with the inclusion of Marimba (a local type of xylophone), which gave Caoba a particular and distinctive sound. Romance De Primavera was an instrumental version of Donna Summer’s Spring Affair, and is surely the standout track. But not less interesting is their version of Love In C Minor (Amor En Do Menor). That is, in the context of productions from the region.

Thanks Carlo! I really would like to have some spares of this! Ha ha! The album is completely un-Googleable, no registries or entries at all. For now, I own the only known (reported) copy.
