Laser Beam

Let’s grab another stone cold Italian killer from the disco fridge. This record was purchased on a Danish fleamarket a few years back, and until Carlo told me otherwise, I thought it only existed on Pinnacle Records UK. Most of the LP is pretty bad, but Laser Beam really stands out…to put it mildly. Also used in me & Nixxon’s latest OD B-Day mix.

Elisan’s Song

This song by the relatively unknown Franco Del Moro falls solidly into the overfitting-italo subcategory, and was perhaps a tribute to his girlfriend at the time? Or his dog? Or parrot?

This was the second of a series of releases on his own private label FDM (his initials). It is also by far the best and most balanced of his productions, that tend to either be too “experimental” or too bland.

Higher And Higher

strobe clubDanny Taylor – Higher And Higher

In the night you often end up building sets around records with strange indefinable presence. I’m looking forward to see if the hard to please disco freaks will approve this Belgian b-side.

Dance The Boxer

John Conteh – Dance The Boxer

John Conteh is a Light Heavyweight World Champion boxer from GB. He also had celebrity status and everything that came with it: fast cars, heavy partying and yes! studio time to record a kickass disco seven in 1975. His younger brother Mike also put one out two years later called Jump The Gun which isn’t half bad either.

Nicht Schummeln, Liebling!

Chris Doerk und Frank Schöbel – Wenn Wir Wollen, Dann Geht’s Los

Chris Doerk – Die Sonne Kommt Immer Wieder

Two in-my-opinion totally irresistible 1974 DDR tunes aus dem DEFA-film Nicht Schummeln, Liebling! / No Cheating, Darling! It’s a football comedy with highly spirited dance scenes performed by tanned girls in miniskirts and white knee-length vinyl boots and boys who are shirtless or wear funky garage workwear stained with motor oil. Super Atmo, super Laune, super Party, supergeil, Super Urlaub, super Wetter, super Sommer, supergeil!

Drop out, tune in and dive headfirst into the beat and the psychedelia, a place throbbing with sonic colors that defy reality, a place where the only limits are the limits of your imagination. Gypsy Spirit

gsPendulum – Gypsy Spirit

Kitschy but catchy tune with all too many words. Thanks to the bounding bass I’ve almost played it out loud. Recorded from a Canadian DJ 45 with thicker labels and longer mixes.

Jesabee Lancer (The Belly Dancer)

Poor Jesabee Lancer…all she ever wanted was to be a belly dancer. But the men wanted more…More…MORE!

Reparata (yes, the same who made “Shoes”) indulging in some surprisingly heavy oriental sounds on this one.

Les Chevaux De Feu (Le Samouraï)

Caravelli was every bit as prolific as Raymond LeFevre and Franck Pourcel, but has been somewhat overlooked. This is not because he couldn’t deliver the goods though, as this one proves. I just love those early Atari sounds sweeping in and out in the chorus section.

Caravelli – Les Chevaux De Feu (Le Samouraï)

On the same album (Confidence Pour Confidence from 1981) you will also find a nice cover version of Kim Wilde’s Kids In America.

Tommy Marten & Ricky Collins – Disco Baby

Feel the sheer animal magnetism of Tommy and Ricky, awakens the roaring beast in you, ja? In any case check the tune and slip from disco to schlager and back again.

Space Caravan

Chris Craft – Space Caravan

The eyes of the envious shall pretend to sleep; but the eyes of the pure and the faithful shall gaze towards the Moons.

“And I will return with numerous Naptha Wah camels, and Z’ab be my guide”.

Thus Yahia Ben and Z’ab and the poets of Anahita journeyed until they came to the Oasis of Malik, where they discovered flowing streams, date-trees, warbling birds, and sweet-smelling substances; and the Oasis appeared like a blessing to enliven the sorrowing heart; and there was much music and dancing and smoking of Haschisch.

– Verses addressed by the Mizar Keita

Killing Me Softly

Harold’s Band – Salome

Glen Burton Experience – Killing Me Softly

The gang’s all here in the first track – Harold is Harold Faltenmeyer from München, backed by his whole posse, meaning Mats Björklund, Pete Bellotte and all the rest from Munich Machine plus Peter Moesser, even. The 1976 tune is yet another kitschy discofication of an evergreen. An acquired taste, certainly, one that takes some experience to get used to. The 2nd cut is more of the sound, this time from the US.

Dillon’s Downtown

Dillon’s Downtown

Dillon’s Downtown was an enormous upmarket disco in the corner of West 5th Street and South Grand Avenue in Los Angeles. The venue, a converted hotel with a ballroom and meeting areas, had three floors with slightly different music in each. The main space throbbed with a mix of popular hustle beats, anthemic big-room bass, sleek ’n’ shiny synths, strings, cosmic arps, grand pianos, huge FX and Epic Drama. The crowd was somewhat dressy but they certainly danced. Going up the stairs from the main hall to the smaller rooms you would see people teaching each other the latest moves in the lounges. The too-tired-to-move-anymore were slumped on the carpeting, rubbing their feet or leaning silently against the walls.

Apart from the intro the music in the mix contains big hits played at the club during the second week of June 1978. Check the final track I Wanna Dance by Marathon, an El Bimbo on speed kind of frantic pounder from Pete Bellotte & co. Quite a tune.

A Gay Virgil

I admit, i am not a big fan of Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy”, too many negative judgements on all these wonderful sexual sinners; nevertheless the part dedicated to Hell is my favourite. I only would have added a little bit more joyful action, sleazy sex and pumped music in it. Among the records played there could be one i casually found one month ago: it’s a Hansa label test pressing 12″ of 1979. The artist is…..Virgil! Exactly same name as the Roman period poet (October 15, 70 BC – September 21, 19 BC) which conducts , in the “Divine Comedy”, trough a journey to Hell and Purgatory, Dante Alighieri himself. The 12″ (45 rpm) has two different tracks, both quite queer: A-side is “Boys In The Street”, while B-side is “Golden Gay Frisco”.

So…let’s imagine Virgil in a club located in Hell packed of naked bodies dancing, and having sex, with the weirdest, rarest, most glamourous disco!

Nino Ferrer – Emilienne

Emilienne was based on an already existing novel but no doubt rushed into production in 1974 to cash in on the enormous success of Just Jaeckin’s Emmanuelle. The less lavishly budgeted Guy Casarel film focuses on a concerned-looking forty-something housewife with bourgeous values, her moustachioed sleazebag of a husband and a bisexual hippy chick ready to rock their boat.

The first half of the film proceeds somewhat sluggishly until the director throws in his pièce de resistance, obviously calculated to top the big shocker sequence in Emmanuelle in which a hooker smokes a cigarette with her vagina. Here, Emilienne the housewife, having been introduced to the delights of Sapphic amour, visists a luxurious bordello for lesbians. In a large room a line of completely naked girls are inspected and fingered by chic old dykes in formal outfits in a harshly lit Helmut Newton-style tableau, while Emilienne looks on. Then, one of the prostitutes is ordered to lay down, and a huge Alsatian dog is called by it’s name. What follows is indeed a bit of a jawdropper.

Later on, Emilienne and the husband are stranded on a rainy coast, seeking refuge in the house of an old hag who naturally turns out to be another dyke. Only she has a harem made of blond, decidedly non-model-like women who stare ahead like The Children of The Damned grown up to be rampant lesbians.

In the picture, the Finnish poster for the film.

Take Off ’77 Part II

take off 2Crazy Boom Sisters – Take Off ’77 Part 2

Wonder why it doesn’t read 33 rpm + 8% on the label, because then this innocent looking 7″ transforms into a cosmic monster. Apparently models in the picture have found the rare 12″ version.
