Oh Romeo

2g.jpg Yet another alias for Bobby Orlando‘s productions. Oh Romeo is a fine piece of italo disco with the obvious “O” touch. This is what Hi-NRG is all about.

Oh Romeo – These Memories (1983)
Oh Romeo – Only A Memory (1984)
Oh Romeo – Living Out A Fantasy (Dub) (1985)
Oh Romeo – Light Of Love (1985)

Ikeya Seki

comet.jpg

Possibly one of my favourite Kano‘s pieces of music.

Follow the comet…

Kano – Ikeya Seki (1983)

On a side note, Kavinsky remade it with a contemporary touch for his 1986 EP

Kavinsky – Grand Canyon (2007)

Thanks to Kundalini for spotting this specific version.

V.I.P.

siamolot1.jpg

Let’s face it, this track is quite an oddity within Françoise Hardy‘s discography. Hardly fitting into the genres she used to play and never followed up by any other similar productions.

It also happens to be my personal favourite from her repertoire.

O

infiniteaxq.jpg

I sincerely believe it’s a great song. On the one hand with its roots both tied in Italian Synthpop and slow paced New Wave, but also heading forward with a rather modern twist.

Nevertheless, and since it is home-made I’m in the end no judge, criticisms welcome and even required.

Reagan + Carter – O (Part 1) (2007)

Reagan + Carter – O (Part 2) (2007)

The Ghost That Walks was kind enough to provide me a smashing remix. Everything has been destructured, distorted and twisted in order to create a true killer track! All Hail The Ghost!

Another Life

travolta-saturday-night_std.jpg One of the most incredible smash hits from the über brilliant Disco-act Kano (no, not that Grime poser 😉 the one and only Kano), namely Another Life, and released in 1983. Some mere 20 years afterwards, the house tunes that sample it are even as outstanding as the original version. True dancefloor killers.

“Another life another lover, where in the world do lonely dreams ever go?” So incredibly dazzling and catchy that it’s impossible to get it out of your head.

Kano – Another Life

Two different portions of the original song sampled or re-created, two different artists and styles, two insane House reduxes.

Angie Care

Another great introspective tune from the original Valerie Dore team. 1984 was a very special year for Italo Disco.

Portuguese Electro

rudi_grenreich1.jpg Moulinex and Xinobi are both ‘distortion-knob electro’ bands from Lisbon, Portugal. And it appears they like to remix each other’s songs

Magic Fly

sputnik_teck-751540.jpg THE tune that launched a Disco sub-genre on its own (but short-lived mind you, what a pity).

The video clip is fun too. All hail robots from space! Your music rocks BIG times.

Space – Magic Fly (1977)

and its cover version by Kebekelektrik, released a few years afterwards (which is sadly not as brilliant and innovative as the original was)

I Want

wavelet.jpg

I’m in the mood for that kind of thing today, so here’s another unpretentious and cheerful Italo Disco tune in the same breathe as the one in the previous ticket. And BTW I do really dig this one.

Nami Shimada

nami-shimada.jpg

Nami Shimada was (she retired from singing in 1990) a J-Pop artist and although I’m not fond of that genre, a few tracks she did, like Sun Shower released in 1989, are really more Garage or House than Pop. And they are good.

Nami Shimada – Sun Shower (H-Track Edit) (2006)

Nami Shimada – Sun Shower

On a side note, Nami Shimada now appears to be DJing in Japan.

Spaced Out

spaced-out.jpg Catchy bassline, funky guitar riff, silly lyrics, high-pitched chorus, robotic chipmunk vocals… what else do you want?

Pure Energy – Spaced Out (1983)

(thanks to blackberrie for the disco-very)

BTW, did you know that two of the Pure Energy team, i.e. Curtis Hudson and John Benitez, are also involved in Madonna’s first LP? The first one has even written Holiday. Neat, huh?

Spring Rain

bonds-disco-fountains.jpg

One hell of a cheerful Disco tune! One of the best symphonic Disco releases of the seventies, suffice to say.

Vivien Vee

vivien-vee.jpg Vivien Vee started her career in the late 70s with plain (Italian-flavoured) Disco and moved into the 80s with Italo Disco. Her most notable hit is IMO the incredible Higher, very melodic and well produced.

BTW most of her songs are arranged and produced by the duo behind smash-hit bands such as Capricorn and Kasso and composed of Giancarlo Meo and Claudio Simonetti. (More on Claudio and his OSTs soon, in an upcoming ticket)

Vivien Vee – Give Me A Break (1979)
Vivien Vee – Higher (1983)
Vivien Vee – Heartbeat (1987)
Vivien Vee – Cross My Heart (Club Mix) (1989)

Appointment In Space

house-of-the-future-1953.jpg A fun attempt at quirky futurism, by the crazy Belgian trio Telex in 1988. From their great Looney Tunes album.

A track looking towards both the late 70s Space Disco and the typical 80s bleepy Synthpop. Mixed with the obvious Belgian touch one would expect from Telex.

Stardance

star-trek-fun.jpg

I must admit I know nothing about John Forde. Except that he used to produce some kind of weird and spacey slow-motion Disco songs.

Seriously (or not), they must have all taken LSD in the recording studio.

John Forde – Stardance (1977)

EDIT: John Forde appears to be an alias (or a typo on the covers) of John Ford.
