Freak It !

Studio 45Freak It ! (1999)
http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=IbMIq3DXByw
(Listen to Rob’s No Ear Mix)

Studio 45 is a duo formed by 2 Dj’s and producers Dole & Kom best known as Clubheroes.

For this one they used a sample from a funky classic:

Don Quichotte

Magazine 60Don Quichotte (No Estan Aqui) (1984)
(Listen to the extended version)

This french pop band released first many covers from classic 60’s slows and others. Then “Costa Del Sol” album for the label CBS was released in 1986 including this easy song. Absolutely funny for me, I like it like that!

Note: you may recognize a guitar sample used recently by Will I Am “I Got It From My Mama” (video)

Pierre De La Touche’s Samples

photo54.jpg

Spotting the Funk samples that Pierre de la Touche recycled in his own productions was a fun game to play, really. Here are my findings: about 50 minutes of great tunes with great loops only.

Dance All Night

photo60.jpg
From left to right: Norman Doray, Pierre De La Touche and College.

This track is IMO a proud example of Disco House at its best. It’s the same recipe as usual, i.e. a funky loop from an old school tune, finely cut up, and a lot of band-pass filtering, but the end result is frankly awesome on the dancefloor. And the remix by Distorded is even better.

N. Doray and P. de la Touche are also part of The Freshmakers (lately re-branded The Frenchmakers), their latest project together, along with Arno Cost.

Cyber People

132-benj-cyber_woman.jpg

Cyber People was a spacesynth project spearheaded by a ubiquitous producer from that era: Alessandro Zanni. Notable writers and arrangers for Cyber People were Giorgio Spagna, the producer and husband of the singer Spagna, Stefano Cundari, Zanni’s long time production partner and Mirko Limoni, who will later on become notorious for his involvement in successful Euro House projects (Black Box anyone?).

Cyber People – Polaris (1984)
Cyber People – Digital Signal Processor (1988)
Cyber People – Doctor Faustu’s (Swedish Remix) (1986)

and my favourite from the lot:

Cyber People – Void Vision (1984)

the next track, although not considered as a proper remix, is clearly a ‘big nod’ from nowadays producers to Cyber People:

Dance / I Was Born This Way

s54_dj_booth_std.jpg

To my knowledge, Dance is most probably the first Disco House tune (i.e. based around a sample from a Disco song) ever produced. A breakthrough at the time of its release and quite visionary in a sense, pre-dating the Disco House production climax that happened around the end of this past decade. It also turned out to be a true underground sell-out rapidly.

Lady Bug

1013-pink-ladybug2.jpg
A smashing track from the band comprised of most members of The Universal Robot Band and the Phreek original crews. It is a sort of sequel to the highly enjoyable Love Bug song released two years before.

The non-sense lyrics are quite cheesy but also fun in a sense.

Bumblebee Unlimited – Lady Bug (1978)

As a rule of thumb, there is always at least one Disco House cover available. This one is fairly up-tempo:

Hands In The Dark

watwiljevanmeqz5.jpg

Produced in 2005 but only properly released in 2007 by the dark italo ‘revivalist’ record label Italians Do It Better, Hands In The Dark is a cool track to relish on headphones. A perfect mood enhancer.

Chromatics – Hands In The Dark

It is in fact a kind of strange and unlikely mashup:
the lyrics and the melody are originally from
R.L. Crutchfield’s Dark Day – Hands In The Dark (1979)

while the instrumental part is sampled from
Chromium – Caribbean Air Control (1979)

Another Life

travolta-saturday-night_std.jpg One of the most incredible smash hits from the über brilliant Disco-act Kano (no, not that Grime poser 😉 the one and only Kano), namely Another Life, and released in 1983. Some mere 20 years afterwards, the house tunes that sample it are even as outstanding as the original version. True dancefloor killers.

“Another life another lover, where in the world do lonely dreams ever go?” So incredibly dazzling and catchy that it’s impossible to get it out of your head.

Kano – Another Life

Two different portions of the original song sampled or re-created, two different artists and styles, two insane House reduxes.

Running Up That Hill (For Cover)

childrunninghappiness.jpg

Everybody (?) knows Kate Bush, talented English artist and behind loads of hits in the eighties. I do really appreciate her Running Up That Hill, released in 1985, and I’ve recently noticed that it’s been covered by a wide array of Electronic producers, a lot.

Some are pure garbage to my ears but others are quite excellent, not surprisingly the ones I prefer are those that kept the simple melody, the strong reverb and all the things that made the original release great.

The Original:
Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill (Extended Version)

A slight Electro redux:
Datassette – Running Up That Hill (2005)

A more Housey outfit:
Housego – Running Up That Hill (2006)

And finally a gentle commercial House reconstruction not using the main chorus as the gimmick:
Infusion – Running Up That Hill (2002)

Edit by Kundalini:
AND finally a slow italo synth-pop because Italians Do It Better (as you should know by now).

Keep On Holding On

Another fine tune from the Midwest duo Josh Barnes and Justen Parris aka Automatic & Silk. Chicagoan House all the way. Bouncing and cheerful.

Voices From Nowhere

Almost exclusively known for his soundtracks for Lucio Fulci’s movies, Fabio Frizzi perfects his art in 1980 for the movie The Beyond. Impressive piece of work, multi-layered (not that rare for a euro-horror movie soundtrack but worth noting) and with a simple but haunting theme.

I always used to think that Frizzi’s scores were out of touch with the pictures from Fulci, but in fact it is for the best: this is an original score and the proof that Frizzi is a great composer.

This is the movie main theme (watch out for the incredible flute),

Fabio Frizzi – Voci Dal Nulla

On a side note, High Contrast – Everything’s Different samples it with great effect
