Karate

One of trendiest soviet song of season 1982-83: underground disco-rock smash “Karate” from “Leysya Pesnya” (“Flow Song”) group.

The song has never been officially released. This version is taken from bootleged live performance (1982).

Hello Song!

2 fragments from 1979 TV benefit of soviet disco ensemble “Zdravstvuy Pesnya” (“Hello Song”).
Disco-funk number in schlager traditions “Love was nearby”:

Cover of Neil Sedaka’s “One way ticket” (a year later after Eruption’s take):

And some more: ensemble’s trumpet-player, Sergey Baulin (unfortunately, he is not on video) taught me to drum in late 80s.

Methusalem “I’ll Get You!”

Methusalem’s “The Black Hole” (1980) in soundtrack  of  “I’ll Get You!” (Nu, Pogodi!) — extremely popular series of Soviet animated shorts (14th episode, 1984).

Still Got the Groove

“Russians Got Groove” group keeps on surprising, and I’d like to present you 3 of most impressive new tracks:

The Noodleman, popular DJ and remixer from Canada kindly shared his deep-house remix of  1981 “I’m No Longer Jealous” – song of Alla Pugacheva, main soviet pop-diva of ‘70s.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1334244″]

Disco-veteran KMTR dug out his 2001 mash-up remix of legendary Zodiac. I’d describe style of track as “… cosmic plague flies from deep space, and no one will survive because we can’t stop dancing…”.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/19493680″]

And finally a heartstopper from Siberian Mosquit0!: edit of Valentina Tolkunova’s song with hard to translate name – something like “Love as a swan…”. This is a rare example of soviet Gothic.

Death Syndicate

How’d you like it: joyful and brainless disco songs mixed with the short audio scenes as if taken from B movies.

For example, a scene of death while shaving:

Bloody Shaving

Disgustingly, isn’t it? Or the intro with an incident with the tommy-gun:

I’m from Syndicate

It was the most popular cassette compilation in early 80-s in Soviet Union. It came behind the Iron Curtain from somewhere out of East Asia with an unknown soviet sailor. Soon cassette crossed the country from the Far East to western borders and infected every cassette-player on the way.

Watch your Winamps!

1. Billy Ocean – Stay The Night (3:45)
2. La Flavour – Mandalay (6:10)
3. Lipps Inc. – Funky Town (7:45)
4. Ottawan – You’re O.K. (5:13)
5. Roberta Kelly – Kabaka Shaka (4:31)
6. Massara – Margherita (2:33)
7. Spargo – You And Me (4:11)
8. T.H.P. – Good To Me (6:56)
9. Gilla – Tom Cat (3:50)
10. Gepy & Gepy – Body To Body (7:20)
11. Dan Perlman – You Know Me, I Know You (3:35)
12. The Whispers – And The Beat Goes On (3:35)
13. Bisquit – Zoo Zoo (Instrumental) (3:14)

Fight Is Going On Again

One of main and mightiest soviet propaganda song (1978)  is curiously laid on funky beat and contains heroic “spaghetti-esque” trumpet solo.

Yury Chernavsky “Hello, Bananan Boy!” (How_Beezar Instrumental Re-Edit)

Here’s maestro Yury Chernavsky again. You might hear his earlier groovy disco classic “Discs Are Circling (How_Beezar Re-Edit)” performed by Krasny Maki band.

3 years later, in 1983 Chernavsky recorded his 1st solo album “Banana’s Islands” which never has been officially released.  In 1987, at the height of the Perestroyka, track “Hello, Bananan Boy” was included in film “ASSA” OST. This film is the cult for every kid grown up in 80s in USSR. I, for example, decided to become a musician right away after the final credits of the film.

“Hello, Bananan Boy” illustrates Disco-Not-Disco influence on indie dance enthusiasts in Soviet Union: bass, drums, infectious guitar riff and freaky vocal with absurd lyrics about little boy Bananan living in a telephone receiver.

In this How_Beezar Instrumental Re-Edit words are cut out, and we can delight with pure rhythm and amazing guitar riff.

Gucko Gucko

Various Artists – Gucko Gucko 20110302

Vintage communist disco from Eastern Europe. It starts with regular (but twisted) disco, passes through electronic wtf territories, and finally ends with unashamedly cheesy italo disco and synthpop.

Yes, I know, the mixing is either atrocious or non-existent, but most tracks were severely warped. I honestly did my best. Excessive sweating, and astronomically huge amounts of swear words were involved in my failed attempt at beatmatching everything.

Janna Aguzarova “Eagle” (How_Beezar Garage Re-Edit, 2011)

janna_aguzarova

Livinglegend Janna Aguzarova is most talented russian pop-singer. She recorded only 2 original albums:

– “Bravo” (1987), as a lead singer of retro-oriented rock’n’roll /pop band Bravo and

– “Russian Album” (1990) — her single solo album with brutal synth-pop sound, where this song “Eagle” is taken from.

Janna Aguzarova has no official website, writes one new song per year, keeps performing and still remains the greatest russian pop-singer.

This re-edit is based on final part of the song with unexpected fat and groovy bass line, referring to great Larry Levan’s mix of Gwen Guthrie’s “Seventh Heaven”.

I Can’t Stop (schlager version)

John (The Monster) Davis’s breakbeat classic is covered by soviet ensemble “Disco”. Yes, simply “Disco”. The chorus sings just one word in russian: “Orchestra!”.

This rare clip is taken from soviet TV music film “Urban Fantasy” (1978) and demonstrates that there are no frontiers for music.

Thanks to rare soviet groove diggers Musicdawn and zencd.

Sven Grünberg (“The Dead Mountaineer Hotel” OST)

Euphoric space-rock theme of Estonian electronic musician Sven Grünberg (in nowadays he is a director of Buddhism Institute in Tallinn).

This film (1979, Tallinn-film, Estonia) is based on sci-fi novel of Strugatsky brothers (soviet writers duo) and primarily curious as an example of estonian representation of west-europian capitalistic life-style: cosmic music, scandinavian interiors, bald-headed women-robots and, well… of course, sex.

Russians Got Groove

russins_got_groove

First of all I’d like to notify Americans of this disturbing picture: it was created and published in USA, not in USSR. The picture illustrates a curious community “Russians Got Groove” at Soundcloud, dedicated to “Groovy tracks, re-edits and remixes from Soviet Union’s dance and club scene”.

Кружатся диски

If you can skip the sections where this young Travolta clone sings, then suddenly the track reveals all its magic.

The great Russian edit specialist How_beezar owns the LP, let’s hope he’s willing to do a little something with this one (another subliminal request) (blink) (blink)

EDIT: lobbying works
