Здравствуй, Песня

Я Жду Тебя

Венера

Огонь Мы Любим Диско

According to Soviet authorities jazz is a Russian invention. Disco must be, too. Here’s their grandiose take on Io Sono Sempre Quello Que, a great version of the Biddu production Disco Fever with the word fever correctly pronounced as FE-VAH, and a driving interpretation of the classic tune Venus.

Boldly, Comrades, In Step

Boldly, Comrades, In Step

Progressive Soviet Disco Music. Because the Artist knows how to make men mad with desire she begins the first sequence slowly. Then the disco beat begins and the Diva commands you to dance!  Maybe you also like a young girl who sings in an innocent but sexy style? Or perhaps a whole row of rough Russian soldiers all at once? It’s all here.

victims

Alexander Gradsky – You’ve Fallen Victims

Russia, our spiritual Motherland of abundant resources, stretching across 12 time zones! You will all stand up during the introduction and when the modern disco music begins with the heroic sounds of Kalashnikovs you will all clap your hands in rhythm.

St John’s Ensemble – St John’s Cosmic Concerto

Heroic space themes from the USSR, from an unidentified album made in 1982. The lp has a generic sleeve with pictures of yellow flowers, no texts of any kind. Track number 3 has an intro apparently lifted off the St Johns tune from 1979.

Who is to blame?

Valery Leontiev “Kto Vinovat?”
Sadly the song was never released on vinyl or CD, and exists only as a TV spot (1982).

Black Russian

Boris Midney is undoubtedly the main russian in international disco. He was born in Moscow, studied at the Moscow Conservatory, moved in New York and…
I would not regard him as a euro-disco creator, I guess his originality is in his gift of being a music visionary. Boris Midney used the disco and pop languages, but music he created was not a pure pop.  His best music moments are close to experiments of Walter Gibbons and Arthur Russell.

Here is last half of Caress’s “Catch The Rhythm” (1979):

Caress – Catch The Rhythm

Danny Krivit (who made one of his best edit using this part of song) recalls that Larry Levan loved that piece and spun it on 2 desks.
And here’s late Midney’s project Double Discovery with “D-D-D-Dance” (1982)

Upliftingdisco Mix by KMTR

Let me introduce comrade Konstantin Timoshenko (aka KMTR, born in Kazakhstan, lives in Sofia/BG) – drummer, vinyl collector, theater composer, DJ, member of many electronic and dance projects and so on and so on… And, yes, he’s a great master of edits. My favorite one (except early Phoreski, of course).

KMTR’s complete profile. KMTR’s  re-edits.

KMRT made this mix specially for Overfitting Disco.

“Souvenir From Musketry Club” OST

“Souvenir From Musketry Club” is soviet radio play based on James Hadley Chase‘s pulp fiction “The Guilty Are Afraid” (1957). The play was recorded in the end of 80’s and has curious soundtrack: a few original (I guess) dark and exciting electro-noir themes plus some old jazz and lounge tunes to bring the spirit of the age. Unfortunately all music performers are uncredited.
I cut all the music snippets (about 50 items) and mixed them in the 32-minutes mini-mix. Enjoy the old school soviet radio-theatre flirted with “hard-boiled” pulp material.

The Lover Gang Minimix

As usual, it’s wild, strange, and full of exotic curiosities. This time it even features South Koreans singing a Russian lullaby, and, apparently, a song about shish kebabs and how good they are.

Various Artists – The Lover Gang Minimix

A kind of follow-up to the Die Unersättlichen mix.

Thanks go out to Discotruper, Italocarlito, Mike Burns, and Dimitri.

  1. Модо – Играй ещё (1981)
  2. Şenay – Honki Ponki (Turkish Version) (Re-Edit) (1979)
  3. Modern Folk Üçlüsü – Dönme Dolap (Baris K Edit) (1981)
  4. Urfalı Babi – Karisk Kebap 3 (Baris K Edit) (1978)
  5. D.D.Sound – She’s Not a Disco Lady (Edit) (1978)
  6. C. Jérôme – Discopyright (1978)
  7. Janina Miščiukaitė – Amžinas šokis (1980)
  8. Raffaella Carrá – Rumore (1974)
  9. Feliciana di S. ‎– Io Es (1978)
  10. The ‎Electric Kids – Schizoid “Disco” Kid (1978)
  11. Продакшн-библиотека – демо-версия 1 (1981)

Sofia

In my opinion Sofia Rotaru was the most beautiful singer in Soviet Union in 70s. She made her best records in 70s too.

Here’s dramatic disco-funk standart “Temp” (“Tempo” in  Russian, 1979) with irreproachable arrangements:

Sofia Rotaru – Temp

And this is her soul side: heartstopper “Lebedinaya Vernost'” (“Swans Fidelity”, 1974). Each time I listen to this song I can’t hold back the tears.

Olympiada-80

“Living Sound”  is a soul/gospel band from USA, travelled throughout the former Communist Bloc and countries of 3rd world as well. They visited USSR in 1980 and recorded a cover of  the anthem of forthcoming Moscow’s Olympic Games.

Living Sound – Olympiada-80

Here’s original version of the song, performed by Estonian Tõnis Mägi (filmed in Tallinn, in 1980)

You have the such eyes

Not entirely disco, just a good, noble song from soviet film “Sandu Follows the Sun” (1963). Voice by Maya Kristalinskaya.

Don’t miss a scene in interior of stylish soviet cafe with natural disco-ball (!).
