Zauberstab

Za ZaZauberstab (1982)
http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=lD7QmKJ1LyQ

Peter La Bonté is Za Za. This is the 3rd single from the only album “Za Za” in 1982 on Blow Up.

Za Za – Zauberstab
Za Za – Zauberstab (instrumental)

Über kitsch and a quite funny tune ! A piece of the NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle) genre = the german new wave.

Note: “Zauberstab” meaning a magic wand for love so…

The german producer Florian Senfter (aka Zombie Nation, Splank!) covered this single in 2002 remixed one year later by Johannes Heil.

Knowing Me, Knowing You Dub

abba_heads.jpg Linda Jane Bull did an awesome job with this ABBA track. She(?) trimmed all the fuss and the extra-sweet pop elements from the original version and spared one single loop only, but what a loop!

This is a wonderful edit full of flange and reverb: the end-result is really dubby and cosmic.

So High

zggs61.jpg It appears it dates back to the late seventies, I simply have no clue how the unedited version sounds like.

Is it just an edit or more of a remix?

This funny and easy single is on the album “Dense Music” released on Ladomat 2000 in 1996.

Whirlpool Productions is a german trio that recorded 4 albums with no much success except a few singles.

Behind this project a man called Justus Köhncke in between. (more…)

Padded Cell

padded-cell.jpg

Padded Cell is a british duo who made an interesting crossover between the genres. Electro, house, disco, rock, jazz, nothing can stop them to do the music they like.

Padded Cell – Signal Failure (2005)

Padded Cell – Picadilly Line Strut (2005)

Well then make your own mind and watch out for the forthcoming album “Night Must Fall” in May 2008. I recommend “Moon Menace” to listen on their page. (more…)

Co-Co Boy

elixir-red-bra-flat.jpg

This minimalist but very funky tune was the main theme for the strip tease sequences in a French TV show called Co-Co Boy. It was broadcast throughout the early 80s on saturday on prime time (!) television – only female topless mind you, no full frontal nudity. But yes: it was not restricted to adult viewing only.

Jean Schultheis – Playmate (1982)

This theme is in fact the instrumental-only section of another song, named Bébé Bop, from the same artist and released the same year. This specific version has been a bit slowed down compared to the original, some extra moanings and whispered vocals have also been added on top.

Oh Superman

Laurie Anderson – O Superman (For Massenet)

The female musician is a talented artist in many ways.

O Superman” her popular first single was released in 1981 before the album “Big Science“.

It’s a kind of abstract electronic with only her sweet voice and ambient effects. It has been remixed… (more…)

Sharevari

A Number Of NamesSharevari

(on Detroit’s local dance show “the Scene” in 1982)

“Charivari” in french is the word to describe a ritual consisting in making noise with cooking instruments to celebrate newly married or to make shame on people for examples.

But this electronic tune has nothing tribal except that it has united the underground Detroit scene with his particular sound.

Defense Remixes

friedrich.JPG

Two home-made remixes of The Ghost That Walks‘ Defense. The first one is a kind of fierce and glitchy techno track where the main loop is tortured to death, while the second takes on a darker edge and is relatively electro regarding the form.
The mixing has been rushed and is really weak, you’d better reduce the bass levels and turn up the volume a tad if you wish to hear anything.

The Ghost That Walks – Defense (Kernighan + Ritchie Remix 1) (2008)

The Ghost That Walks – Defense (Kernighan + Ritchie Remix 2) (2008)

All the best to The Ghost with his new record label.

Looking For Love

312p320with20girl3iy.jpg

Maethelvin strikes again! I just love this simple yet so melancholic melody.

Maethelvin – Looking For Love (2008)

As an extra bonus, a new track from his Valérie team fellows: The Outrunners.

Alternative Reality – Get Away (The Outrunners Remix) (2008) Soon to be released.
IMHO the original version was plain bad, The Outrunners did a great job rewriting it from scratch.

C’est La Vie

Yet another off topic ticket but I really couldn’t resist. Though I’m no fan of Martin Solveig, this remix is THE sh%t!

Anthemic French House with maximum distortion. I love those f%cking beets!

Martin Solveig – C’est la vie (The Bloody Beetroots Remix) (2008)

Thanks to Kidz By Colette for sharing this exclusive track. Soon to be released on the next Solveig’s album.

Knightlife

midevil-knight-deluxe-plus.JPG

Seriously, he is one of the very few to have brought out a perfect blend of synthpop, french house and ‘distortion-knob’ electro; and yes: Knightlife is as good as it gets.

He is also quite new on the scene and surely someone to eagerly watch out for in the future. I discovered his work out of sheer luck and now I must admit I’m totally hooked on his sound.

Nami Shimada

nami-shimada.jpg

Nami Shimada was (she retired from singing in 1990) a J-Pop artist and although I’m not fond of that genre, a few tracks she did, like Sun Shower released in 1989, are really more Garage or House than Pop. And they are good.

Nami Shimada – Sun Shower (H-Track Edit) (2006)

Nami Shimada – Sun Shower

On a side note, Nami Shimada now appears to be DJing in Japan.

Running Up That Hill (For Cover)

childrunninghappiness.jpg

Everybody (?) knows Kate Bush, talented English artist and behind loads of hits in the eighties. I do really appreciate her Running Up That Hill, released in 1985, and I’ve recently noticed that it’s been covered by a wide array of Electronic producers, a lot.

Some are pure garbage to my ears but others are quite excellent, not surprisingly the ones I prefer are those that kept the simple melody, the strong reverb and all the things that made the original release great.

The Original:
Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill (Extended Version)

A slight Electro redux:
Datassette – Running Up That Hill (2005)

A more Housey outfit:
Housego – Running Up That Hill (2006)

And finally a gentle commercial House reconstruction not using the main chorus as the gimmick:
Infusion – Running Up That Hill (2002)

Edit by Kundalini:
AND finally a slow italo synth-pop because Italians Do It Better (as you should know by now).

Chromatics – Running Up That Hill (2007)

\ˈmat-el-vin,\ ?

Another artist from the informal Valerie crew I’ve recently stumbled upon, Maethelvin (whatever how it’s pronounced) has an interesting sound.

The analogy with The Outrunners‘ sound (recently reviewed) is quite appropriate but there’s something else and I can’t define it. One thing for sure, it sounds good.
