Pyar Karnevale

pyar

Asha Bhosle – Pyar Karnevale

“Its rising is not bright
nor its setting dark

Unceasing, continuous
Branching out in roots innumerable
Forever sending forth the serpent coil
of living things
Mysterious as the formless existence
to which it returns

Twisting back
Beyond mind

We say only that it is form from the formless
Life from spiral void”

—Prehistoric Prayers by Timothy Leary

Mondgesicht

mondgesichtOrchester Ambros Seelos – Mondgesicht

Is there anything more beautiful than late August with these dark, warm and damp nights filled with tempting tobacco smoke. The great strange dream called summer is slowly fading away. As the overtly quoted On The Road phrase goes: “We were all delighted, we all realized we were leaving confusion and nonsense behind and performing our one and noble function of the time, move“.

Someone Switched Me On

Usha – Someone Switched Me On

It’s the mighty Usha Uthup from India of course, here delivering an early eighties tune typically and totally out of sync with the zeitgeist of it’s era. This one comes on like something out of the psychedelic sixties, with added seventies disco vibe. Which, naturally, is a perfect combination.

In the night you often end up building sets around records with strange indefinable presence. I’m looking forward to see if the hard to please disco freaks will approve this Belgian b-side.

Abu Ali

abualiZiad Rahbani – Abu Ali

There is something so absurdly discouraging in living in Finland in November that you should definitely try it. Anyone can lose hope and enthusiasm of better tomorrow in this endless darkness. It feels like escapism is de rigueur to survive. This dreamy lysergic soundscape from 1978 (Lebanon/Greece) is my drug of choice. I want to escape to those dark warm nights of late August. Maybe a weekend with the chosen few at the cottage. Psychedelic light projections in the forest. Sauna all the night. Quality absinthe and talk, talk, talk. Dancing to the full version of Abu Ali at 5.37 ante meridiem. Only 270 days.

Erotico Mistico

erotico mistico picEnnio Morricone – Erotico Mistico

Nixxon posted the amazing disco mix of Come Maddalena. Tune so beautiful, that I remember crying for the first 27 times I heard it. I can resist everything but temptation to post one of my all time faves from the original 1971 soundtrack. I’ve played Erotico Mistico a couple of times as an opening track. Naturally it’s been played for your aural pleasure, but also to make a point. Please don’t bother to ask for the usual club hits. Still, there will always be people, who think I should own the popular stuff and what’s even more disturbing – play them in public. Unsurprisingly I’ve been deeply in the underground with my records.

Escapade With Zero

1156Skorpio – Escapade With Zero

“The possibility of dialectics of desire, of an unpredictability of bliss: The bets are not placed, there can still be a game.” Quoting Roland Barthes here because his theory of jouissance (bliss) pretty much sums how I feel about collecting and playing disco records. It’s not the mere pleasure (plaisir), but the possibilities to unpredictable connections between various sounds, images and desires that keep the game interesting.

フレッシュ・フェイリュア(輝け太陽)

hair

The Japanese Cast of Hair – フレッシュ・フェイリュア(輝け太陽)

The Japanese version of Let The Sunshine In, the finale of the musical Hair, is the most rhythmically accented of the cast recordings made during the late 60s. As you can hear, it’s approaching disco already.

The lyrics mirror the English original. Some of it is excessively deep:

“Somewhere
Inside something there is a rush of
Greatness
Who knows what stands in front of
Our lives
I fashion my future on films in space
Silence
Tells me secretly
Everything
Everything…
The rest is silence
The rest is silence
The rest is silence”

This seems to refer to the cosmic mystery that is life and suggests people are capable of rising to god-like greatness. “I fashion my future on films in space” points not at cameras but has to do with the thin film that creates our reality and our supposed control over it.

“Silence tells me everything” could be about meditation, though “The rest is silence” is a quote from Shakespeare which refers to death.

Go figure. But, in any case the music is great and Japanese graphic design of the sleeve is superb.
