Tokyo Model Mix

Here’s a great Japanese cover of Kraftwerk’s The Model plus related and unrelated stuff like Patrizia Caselli’s version of Johnny Guitar, Paula Koivuniemi’s hysterical Disco Cha Cha and Berto Pisano’s Tic Nervoso.

The Lure

The Lure

“From this overhead view it seemed as though every inch of the place, dance floor, lounges, bars, doorways, was covered with bodies, and every body was twitching, jumping, swirling in an almost Brownian motion as though a giant electric current had been forced through the walls. Four hundred sweeping, twirling, blinking, shooting, stroboscoping lights utterly destroyed the shape, solidity, essence of every object he looked at. Everything moving so quickly, then shifting rapidly to another shape, another density, another brightness, that when he tried to focus on the dj’s booth – shoulder hight over the dance floor – he could only make out and hold its general shape for a second before it too fragmented into a pointillist landscape: scallops of electric blue shoving against points of fuchsia, eradicated by slashes of red, then greens, then purples, pushed aside by dashes of orange and magenta into colors that he could not even begin to name or describe, never having seen or known of their exitence before.

Simultaneously, he was attacked on all sides by the sheer rush of sound. Beneath him, huge speakers ten feet tall erupted into staccato thumping so deep he could feel its pulse in his arteries. Around him, suspended in the air, every few yards, tweeters shrieked, chattered, whined, aahed, beeped, sang, screamed. Suddenly, two soprano voices in a shrill chorus were twittering in his left ear. Just under them, a dozen trumpets blared the same color red that streaked across his eyes from a reflection off a double-hinged mirror, then subsided into a punctuating throb. Beyond them, behind him, the multiple rhythms of tambourines and maracas suddenly began like a chattering monkeys, like wild-eyed, screeching, tropical-colored birds of prey. Now, a thin stiletto-sharp silver alto held the air, as the lead singer’s voice began the words. Between it, beneath it, all around it was the bedrock visceral, bloodpumping, heart-srumming, ear-buzzing bass which he fought as it reached out to grip his legs like a viscous, lifesucking force. But he could not resist, and slid into it deeper and deeper, slid foward inexorably, pushed far into the center of the dance floor, where he was suddenly still for a half second, like a frame from a film of a hydrogen bomb’s mushroom cloud. Then everything was in motion again. Alana’s hands reached out in the colored, fractured, light-growing air between them, gliding smooth and buttery soft, evoking sudden images of dancing girls’ arms in harems, of the arms of Hindu statues, of Balinese dancers’ arms making strange, enigmatic symbols before his eyes, finally sneaking around his body, changing shape. Noel could not take the barrarge on his optic nerve anymore and closed his eyes. The sounds continued deeper, louder, closer to his skin it seemed, invading him, detonating every individual cell until he could see their tiny nuclei individually shatter.”

Disco Delirium from Felice Picano’s 1979 novel The Lure. This book was inspired by the same series of partly unsolved murders as Gerald Walker’s novel Cruising, which William Friedkin turned into a film in 1980, one of my personal all time faves. Sadly, the excited buzz that the original director’s cut dvd would include a scene in which a man’s naked stomach is seen bulging outwards during a fisting scene, was proven to be just a rumour.

The music continues where The Keys post left off, with a full hour of Jerry Bonham mixing the classics – and how!

“Souvenir From Musketry Club” OST

“Souvenir From Musketry Club” is soviet radio play based on James Hadley Chase‘s pulp fiction “The Guilty Are Afraid” (1957). The play was recorded in the end of 80’s and has curious soundtrack: a few original (I guess) dark and exciting electro-noir themes plus some old jazz and lounge tunes to bring the spirit of the age. Unfortunately all music performers are uncredited.
I cut all the music snippets (about 50 items) and mixed them in the 32-minutes mini-mix. Enjoy the old school soviet radio-theatre flirted with “hard-boiled” pulp material.

Percussions

Percussions

Four long percussive tracks for exploring body consciouness thru jazz and discothéque dance: Piau Della Tortilla by Bambibanda E Melodia, Sangandongo by Niagara, Kermesse Non Héroique by Guy Pedersen and Lotta Limbo by Billy Strange. I played the Bambibanda for the first time at Camp Cosmic last summer under the full moon and became acutely aware of it’s spectrum of vibrations and it’s deep mantric effect.

At The Saint

At The Saint

The legendary Saint opened in New York’s East Village in 1980, with a renovation cost of 4.5 million dollars that equals more than 11.5 million today. The djs included Jim Burgess and Roy Thode. In addition to the music, the place offered extreme non-simulated sex shows. Here’s a couple of big tunes from the club spinned under the huge planetarium dome in March 1987, including Jimmy Galvin’s If It Takes A Miracle and the number one track that month The Girl Who Seduced The World by Louie Louie. Check also Raquel Welch moaning on her This Girl’s Back In Town 12″ – could it be it was her doing the same on the L’Animal soundtrack, after all?

The Longest Possible From Bob

The longest possible from Bob

Bob is Bob Crewe, a solo act and a producer who first hit big with the swinging bachelor pad lounge classic Music to Watch Girls By in 1966. In 1968 he composed An Angel is Love and other tracks for the Barbarella soundtrack. During the mid-70s Bob started doing disco like everybody else, first for Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes ( Get Dancin’ & I Wanna Dance With Choo ). A year later in 1976 he released an album under the moniker B.C.G. The Bob Crewe Generation. The sound is overblown cabaret disco to the max but trust Bob to get it right. Along with the early Ritchie Family albums, Begin The Beguine by Johnny Mathis and My Sweet Summer Suite by the Love Unlimited Orchestra, this is as good as that stuff gets.

Here we have three of the main titles in a mix. In 1976 nothing but the absolute longest versions of anything would do on American dancefloors. The first tune Cherry Boy is from the album as that’s the only version there is – with lyrics like “your ass is your ticket to paradise, better be ready to pay the price, it’s so nice so nice”. Street Talk is the full 9’22” 12-inch version. Menage A Trois is also the long 12″ one clocking 5’05”.

Disco After Death Mix

Jussi Kantonen – Disco After Death Mix

What happens after Azul Y Negro’s Hertzanfall/Infarcto? This is when La Santa Muerte, Lady of the Land of the Dead, will come and grab you by the hair. You will dance together first to a track from the Milkyways album, then to stuff like Pazuzu by Ennio Morricone, the very long and impossibly grand Proxima Centauri by I Signori Della Galassia, Como Te Quiero by Barbados Climax, Crazy People by Romy Haag, Piritta’s Ota (Take) and more.
