Rupert goes to the club

NYC 26.3.1977

Actor Rupert Everett is one of the most prominent British disco queens. In the volume one of his memoirs called Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins – stuffed with gossip about people like Helmut Newton, Julia Roberts and of course Madonna – he writes about his nights at the legendary Paris discothéque Le Sept. According to the author the following took place there in 1976: “And then, when ”Carwash” bean to play, Saint Laurent and Nureyev jumped up and came hand in hand onto the dance floor. They started jiving together, as I wiggled my way towards them and danced for five ecstatic minutes by their side. When the backing girls sang “toot toot beep beep” they raised their hands and wagged their fingers in unison”.

Rupert dear, there’s no such chorus in the Rose Royce classic. You’re thinking of Donna Summer’s Bad Girls. If you who supposedly lived on the dance floors of London, Paris, St Tropez and New York during the late seventies don’t know your 1976 Rose Royce track from your 1979 Donna Summer song, how are we to trust anything you write?

In 1977 Rupert lived in New York and that means more disco coverage in the book. By this time the details are no longer to be trusted, however entertaining the whole thing is. But, according to the club lists published in Vince Aletti’s Disco Files, the sounds above are what he must have been dancing to exactly 40 years ago.

The 80s

80s-5

The 80s

The 80s were about wearing black on black, not exhanging bodily fluids, forgetting about New York and flying to London instead. Grace Jones and Pedro Almodóvar made immense impact. The best fonts were by Neville Brody, seen in magazines like Face and the Arena. From France, Philippe Starck emerged as the new designer god. Communism fell, MTV was born and there was famine in Ethiopia. Nights were spent on watching horror movies in cinemas and ultraviolent Hong Kong gangster films on vhs but people still danced on weekends. Computers took over. Anything else…no, that’s pretty much it.

The sounds? Here’s some of the right stuff in a mix.

The Unnamed Avenger Minimix 2

868633176837456.24563483486231

It’s essentially the spiritual sequel to The Unnamed Avenger Minimix. It’s still as strange and for sure totally lacks direction. This time we trade cosmic luchadores and Bollywood fighters for Afro super sentais. Sort of. Enjoy.

Kudos to Jussi and Discotruper for part of the selection. (more…)

Disco Dance 7

mix

Icons Florinda Bolkan, Cat Stevens and Helmut Berger photographed outside a discothéque. It can’t be Le Sept in Paris as there was no canopy to announce the club at 7 Rue St Anne, just an anonymous black door. It’s not the Voom Voom either in Juan Les Pins judging by the clothes they’re wearing as nobody went there off season. Perhaps what we’re seeing is the entrance of the famous Piper club in Rome or the Audium in Madrid?

Classic British

Classic British

According to a recent poll by the British Council, culture and history are seen as UK’s most attractive features. Weather and food are the worst. The Brits are very polite but they have bad drinking and eating habits.

Shakespeare, the Queen and David Beckham are their biggest cultural icons. We disagree. Far more important: Biddu Orchestra.

Classic European

Two thirds of the men in our test group rated eurodisco as their favorite. It’s shaped exactly right (to allow more movement) and is lubricated inside and out. Testers said it flexed well and the action lasted a long time.

Our eurodisco provides lasting pleasure for both you and your partner(s) with warm, tingling sensations that allow for the highest possible level of sensitivity.

Los Bomberos & otros

top five_jpeg

Los Bomberos & otros

Spring IS here and dancing right now to Viva America and the rest from my recently posted list of faves is a good start to warm up those lazy winter bones. The sound is summer disco, made of of latin and bossa-flavoured easy listening, library music (recordings for so called music libraries from where film, radio and TV producers could license titles for their productions), psychedelia, soundtracks, lightweight pop and lollipop soul.

First up is Banzai featuring les Glodettes whose Viva America is the ultimate summer song if you ask me. The Glodettes were the backup dancers of legendary late French singer Claude Francois and they probably never sang a note on any record, only appearing on sleeves and promo videos. No matter as this tune is fantastic. The synths swirl and flash around on a highly energetic rhythm base topped by a hypnotic bass line, explosive percussion and an animated lead vocalist shouting in Spanish. Impossible not to groove along. You’ll sense the Glodettes all around you twirling madly.

The power of the rhythms increases, some playful intersections appear and the chorus assumes a less hysterical but more seductive tone in the next tune Ninas by Los Bomberos. All following tracks are in a similar vein and definitely a joy to dive into for any devotee of El Bimbo-influenced mondo disco.

Prince Albert Orchestra’s Try To Satisfy Me was included in the list but as this post is all about summer and fun I didn’t want to promote anything too expensive and hard to get. So, it had to give way to others more easily available, like Ela Ela by the Greek band Axis. And it’s just as good. This thing grooves and steams and freaks out throughout the whole record, with a mindripping fuzzed out bouzouki break that pushes you into a quick state of trance you’d want to go on for hours, melting your soul while your body shakes from the impulses and the psychedelic flow of colors. Campasino! Disco Piper! Couldn’t stop and had to throw in Chinese Kung Fu by Banzai as well, and Lalabye, and naturally the OUTSTANDING Magic Combo By African Magic Combo! But does this mix make sense and is it all well mixed in the traditional way? No, it’s more like a frenzied outburst of insane happiness, like oh how I love this music and yes the coming summer will be great!

Overfitting Disco Juice

disco juice

Jussi Kantonen mix – D.C LaRue’s Disco Juice.

Broadcast last Saturday night on Newton Radio in NYC in D.C.LaRue’s Disco Juice show, this is 75 minutes of tracks, clips of which were posted at Overfitting Disco ages ago, posted quite recently or, as in a few cases, posted not yet at all. We’re going back to basics here a lot, into content which has always related to our target audience. Encouragement and musical motivation to drop-outs, outcasts and outlaws, people like you and me. That’s the ticket, right? No fucking Abba here.

That’s got to be Erika Blanc in the pic, btw.

“Ever since I was a young boy,
I’ve been into the disco ball.
From Soho down to Brighton
I must have seen them all.
But I ain’t seen nothing like him
In any amusement hall…

That weird, odd and sick kid
We’re sure gonna have a ball!

He never stands like a statue,
Becomes part of the machine.
Feeling all the bumpers
Always playing clean.
He plays by intuition,
The digit counters fall.

That weird, odd and sick kid
We’re all gonna have a ball!”

(with apologies to Pete Townshend)

Voodoos ‘N’ Ketamine

Voodoos ‘N’ Ketamine

There’s a level in-between dreams and reality. In that subconscious state you can get in contact with your biggest fears and passions. Some say ketamine can bring you there, but i will not encourage you to try it out. Maybe what you believe is in-between reality and dreams, in fact is a secret floor between life and death. And who says you can find the escape door when you’re there?

Party with Susana

Susana opened the door and the guests were taken aback with the sight – the Hostess was wearing the skimpiest of dresses and nothing under her highly fashionable satin jacket. “Entre por favor! Edwige, Jimmy, Udo, all of you, make yourselves comfortable. We’re still waiting for the Overfitting Disco listeners. Once they arrive, I’ll turn the music up and we can all start to GET DOWN!”

California Girls

female-trouble

California Girls

Happy holidays everyone! Time once again to honor the real symbol of the Festive Season, miss Dawn Davenport (as played by Divine in Female Trouble, the career highlight of director John Waters). To remind you of the story here it is in a nutshell. Schoolgirl Dawn goes into a rage on Christmas morning. She runs away and immediately gets raped by a hitchhiker with hideously soiled underwear. Dawn then becomes a single mother, a glamorous model and finally, a criminal and a murderess – all thanks to her parents’ refusal to buy her cha-cha heels for her present.

Here’s a medley of disco tunes focusing on problems of teenagers like Dawn. The vibe is pink Americana with big drama, big arrangements and huge orchestras playing behind heartbroken or deliriously happy vocalists. A few of the records are in terrible condition but so what, crank up the volume and keep dancing.

This is my last post for 2015, see you all in 2016! Don’t forget that the first party of the year with several of us Overfitting Disco djs in the international lineup will take place in Berlin on January 15-18th @ Griessmuhle, with people like Bordello a Parigi.

At Halston’s

halston ext

halston townhouse

bpm 124 – 132 – 118

bpm 101 – 105

We would very much like to arrange a party at one of the most iconic townhouses in New York, the Paul Rudolph-designed building at 101 East 63 Street. In 1974 the property was bought by American fashion designer Halston who turned it into a playground for the likes of Bianca Jagger, Andy Warhol, Grace Jones, all sorts of fashionistas and rentboys and Liza Minnelli.

It would be fitting to start the event with music illustrating the early years of the decadent N.Y disco scene, first with fast beats and tracks with luxurious orchestration. Then, during Bolly and hors d’oeuvers, we could play something more relaxed. The fast section contains the great, very long half-instrumental version of the often injustly ignored Claudja Barry tune “Why Must A Girl Like Me”.

The house is currently for sale. The price is 40 million dollars.

American Classics

Brash, excessive, aggressive, flashy, compulsive, humorous, enthusiastic, uninhibited, extravagant, vulgar, funky, thrusting, jazzy, energetic, ostentatious, neurotic, exuberant, dramatic – American disco can be like that. Check it out here. Long versions, of course.
