Discobsession

barbarella_ver21.jpg

Ajello is an italian duo formed by Luca Roccatagliati (aka DJ Rocca for his break-ground) and Fabrizio Tavernelli.

They released several vinyls mostly for Mantra Vibes producing a powerful house with sci-fi effects and good breaks. Here 2 tracks I love:

Ajello – Discobsession (2005)

Ajello – Amore Alieno (2006)

The End

10945790_gal.jpg These are two remarkable Disco remakes of John Carpenter‘s original soundtrack for Assault On Precinct 13

Although they were not the work of the master (but of Ralf Henning, a composer specialised in the adaptation of successful OSTs to the dancefloor), the two versions in preview were first released under Carpenter’s own name in 1982.
I don’t know whether J. Carpenter gave his approval and this is actually a complete different story.

The Splash Band – The End (Disco Version) (1984)

The Splash Band – The End (Sound Version) (1984)
(The track name comes from the German title of the movie: Das Ende.)

For comparison purpose, the original score from 1976:

Feel Alright

Komiko – Feel Alright (1982)
(Listen to the full track)

Not much to say about this song except it is a groovy thang! Beautiful soul chant, bassline and a few effects full of funkyness produced by Gary R. Turnier (from Gary’s Gang) and the influent Darryl Payne.

High On

Lifelike‘s album is not yet in sight… 2007 happened to be a very busy year for him as an in-demand remixer, now that it’s a bit more quiet let’s hope he’s on it.

Obaa Sima

delux8502.jpg

It could have been an early Chicago House tune from circa 1986, except that it is African and likely produced quite recently (in fact I really don’t know).
The track comes from the blog Awesome Tapes From Africa (the name says it all).
No artist bio, no nothing. Grab the tape duplicate from the address above quickly, before it disappears as fast as it came out of thin air…

Premature ejaculation

l_e74fd73a9b52c6ff4b9ae8402e9e32b8.jpg

Bangkok Impact is a project of the Finnish Sami Liuski. His productions were released on labels like Clone, Bunker or Viewlexx with many aliases. Most of them released on Crème like this 12 inches “Premature ejaculation” in 2007 that’s quite progressive and powerful on A-Side while the other is more retro.

Dance / I Was Born This Way

s54_dj_booth_std.jpg

To my knowledge, Dance is most probably the first Disco House tune (i.e. based around a sample from a Disco song) ever produced. A breakthrough at the time of its release and quite visionary in a sense, pre-dating the Disco House production climax that happened around the end of this past decade. It also turned out to be a true underground sell-out rapidly.

Tracey In My Room

hotel-room.jpg

Much hyped when released as a bootleg in 2000, this track was actually done by Ben Watt from the Everything But The Girl fame but under cover. It then went legit soon after and even published as a plain EBTG’s remix. I still love that song from the first time I heard it.

It comprises the acappella from Everything But The Girl – Wrong and the instrumental part of Sandy Rivera – Come Into My Room (Take It Back Mix) – a Soul Vision remix, hence the name of the bootleg.

Face To Face

blgal875.jpg

Maybe the best known tune from the German pop band The Twins, a simple and naive melody you simply can’t forget.

The Twins – Face To Face – Heart To Heart (1982)

Shy Rose re-used the melodic line a few years later in what became in turn her greatest hit:

Shy Rose – I Cry For You (1987)

Another fine example of the appeal of this melody can be heard in a rather House-ish song from the mid-nineties:

Mozaic – Rays Of The Sun (Electric Beach Mix) (1996)

Please keep me posted if you happen to know a song using this melodic pattern and released before The Twins’ version.

Another Life

travolta-saturday-night_std.jpg One of the most incredible smash hits from the über brilliant Disco-act Kano (no, not that Grime poser 😉 the one and only Kano), namely Another Life, and released in 1983. Some mere 20 years afterwards, the house tunes that sample it are even as outstanding as the original version. True dancefloor killers.

“Another life another lover, where in the world do lonely dreams ever go?” So incredibly dazzling and catchy that it’s impossible to get it out of your head.

Kano – Another Life

Two different portions of the original song sampled or re-created, two different artists and styles, two insane House reduxes.

Lifelike & Kris Menace – Discopolis (Alan Braxe Remix) (2006)

Junior Jack – Life (2007)

Nami Shimada

nami-shimada.jpg

Nami Shimada was (she retired from singing in 1990) a J-Pop artist and although I’m not fond of that genre, a few tracks she did, like Sun Shower released in 1989, are really more Garage or House than Pop. And they are good.

Nami Shimada – Sun Shower (H-Track Edit) (2006)

On a side note, Nami Shimada now appears to be DJing in Japan.
