Dance With The Devil

dance_with_devil_sketch_by_annyalice-d4dqye2

Sandy Nelson – Dance With The Devil

“The fire inside me don’t fade away
The smoke dances around the room
Never again to see the light of day
And the darkness starts to consume

The dance comes close to an end
And the light flickers out
They say that I did condescend
As the devil twirled me about”

– Elizabeth Wurstel. The music is an improved version of the Cozy Powell tune, made in 1974.

Stolen Property

Stolen Property – Low Rider

In the lowrider scene cars are partly concieved as bodies. The preparation of a lowrider is a preparation of a public self as much as it is the crafting of a cultural text into an industrial product.

The 1975 track is a Munich-made take on the War classic.

Samba de Acapulco

samba

Konrad Plaickner Orchestra – Samba de Acapulco

If you’re feeling a bit parched and a Mojito isn’t your choice of poison, try something else with a more or less authentic Brazilian mood, something that would mix well with Tony Holiday’s Tanze Samba Mit Mir. Konrad here first aims to entice discerning listeners – like us – with the chic packaging. It’s the music inside however that really is to be taken seriously, a emminently danceable Italian number from 1977, with 47% alcohol, all-artifical tropical flavours and a sultry Cinecittà chant.

Tanze Ein Schlager Mit Mir (or seven of them)

schlager

Tanze Ein Schlager Mit Mir (or seven of them)

Tony Holiday sevens abandoned behind old boxes at City Music in Berlin! In filthy condition yes but eternal in their power to schlager-ize. Threw some other elevent sounding tunes in too for Eine Echte Deutsche Hitparade. Los!

Party with Susana

Susana opened the door and the guests were taken aback with the sight – the Hostess was wearing the skimpiest of dresses and nothing under her highly fashionable satin jacket. “Entre por favor! Edwige, Jimmy, Udo, all of you, make yourselves comfortable. We’re still waiting for the Overfitting Disco listeners. Once they arrive, I’ll turn the music up and we can all start to GET DOWN!”

Annamaria Rizzoli

rizzoliIMG

Showgirl Anna Maria Rizzoli had a massive exposure in the 70s due to her “ultimate bimbo babeness” status. One of the undisputed queens of italian commedia sexy, and three times cover girl of the italian “Playboy” edition, she retired to private life during the early 80s. “Tu solo tu” is a 1979 monster sleazebag produced by Andrea Lo Vecchio, among the most prolific italian songwriters and arrangers, and was probably made to capitalize on her appearance on the Sanremo festival that same year. Check out the demented choruses and the off-keybubbling synths: absolutely delicious!

El Matador

71_Rallye_Costa_del_Sol_Lucas_Sainz_Juan_Ca-300x196

Yes it is the same Lucas Sainz of Los Pekenikes fame, already covered here.

The italian issue of the 45 mysteriously discarded “Rodilla Rota” and opted for “Caminando” as A side. The flipside “El Matador” is to me the best track of both issues, and possibly one of the standout tracks of the LP.

Surprinsingly cinematic, and a proper soundtrack of Lucas’ race at the VI Rallye Internacional Costa del Sol in 1965 where he was driving this Renault Alpine 1440.

Andrea Mingardi Supercircus – Funky, Funky

Judging by the cover this must have been yet another tune originally heard and seen during some Italian television extravaganza in 1977. Think 18 girls in silver lamé bikinis dancing around a lewdly salivating host while the studio audience claps their hands in unision. It ain’t bad at all, a kind of a Best Disco in Roma Town with snippets of hits like Ali Shuffle and Disco Duck.

Гимн СССР Bimbo

Maria Lukats – Melodya Bimbo

No better way to start a new year than with El Bimbo with a dash of the surreal! Here’s comrade Lukats proving that while the Soviet Union may have disintegrated into fifteen separate countries, it’s collective spirit will always live on it the performances of it’s artists.

Do You Want To Dance (I Do)

Riviera – Do You Want To Dance (I Do)

It doesn’t get much more disco than this German 7 inch flip side. At first you might be a bit unimpressed but after 1 min. the hook is stock and you don’t want it to stop.

California Girls

female-trouble

California Girls

Happy holidays everyone! Time once again to honor the real symbol of the Festive Season, miss Dawn Davenport (as played by Divine in Female Trouble, the career highlight of director John Waters). To remind you of the story here it is in a nutshell. Schoolgirl Dawn goes into a rage on Christmas morning. She runs away and immediately gets raped by a hitchhiker with hideously soiled underwear. Dawn then becomes a single mother, a glamorous model and finally, a criminal and a murderess – all thanks to her parents’ refusal to buy her cha-cha heels for her present.

Here’s a medley of disco tunes focusing on problems of teenagers like Dawn. The vibe is pink Americana with big drama, big arrangements and huge orchestras playing behind heartbroken or deliriously happy vocalists. A few of the records are in terrible condition but so what, crank up the volume and keep dancing.

This is my last post for 2015, see you all in 2016! Don’t forget that the first party of the year with several of us Overfitting Disco djs in the international lineup will take place in Berlin on January 15-18th @ Griessmuhle, with people like Bordello a Parigi.

Soldaditos De Plomo

Los Pekenikes – Soldaditos De Plomo

It’s not like the Pekenikes albums are rubbish as such but they only have one standout track each. On the 1979 lp there’s this, an unclassifiable item part rock, part disco, part Semana Santa progression music.

Sacerdotisas de Baal

baal

Alaska Y Dinarama – Sacerdotisas De Baal

“And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.” And the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench, and the creatures large and small that lived in it, and a wailing was heard eleven times. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.” And Elijah said to them, “Seize the Priestesses of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and fornicated with them.” – 1 Kings 18.

La Mer

scarlet

Scarlet – La Mer (Beyond The Sea)

Realesed only in Japan in 1978. Other disco acts who dabbled in this tune include Soul Price Orchestra, Juditte, Guitar Twins and Prince Albert Orchestra.

The track was written by the noted French singer Charles Trenet, an admirer of of surrealist poets and Catholic mystics. He recorded for Columbia label and used to hang around with people like Louis Armstrong and Charlie Chaplin. In 1963, he was charged with corrupting the morals of four young men.
