Glaciers Of Ice

El Michels Affair – Glaciers Of Ice

USA 2006.

The first entry in the Shaolin series by a New York band,  a smooth soundtrack-style instrumental cover version of the Wu-Tang Clan tune.  The faces are Ogami Itto and Dairogo, a deadly father-and-son swordman team from Kozure Ôkami’s Sanzu No Kawa No Ubaguruma / Baby Cart From River Styx / Shogun Assassin.

Le Chat

Pussycat – Le chat (1983)
pusschatbottom6551186413814368814138614816

A surprisingly good piece of fluffy Italo Disco. The lyrics can be roughly translated from French into English as “You wanted to touch the neighbour’s pussy/pussycat“. It’s the same ambiguous word in both languages.

It’s in fact a cover version of a 1976 track by the same author, Albert Verrechia, who was also notably involved in the band Belle Epoque as a writer (her sister was the singer; you know, the one with the so distinctive voice).

Washed Out – Belong (2009)

It comes from a self released album, pressed in very low quantities by the artist, and IMHO it’s the proof that sometimes big record labels miss the unmissable.

Watch out for its slowed-down version of Gary Low – I Want You, called Feel It All Around: (more…)

msge688117613617-8817517817 It does really sound like Fabio Frizzi’s Zombie, and for good reasons actually: this is the genuine prototype of this song.

A strange synthetic cover of Henri Mancini’s soundtrack famous theme from 1963. Have fun!

The Black Hole

A Disney’s movie theme redux ala space disco:

Nostromo – The Black Hole (1979)

The second title on the 7” appears to be an original song, inspired by the Dune saga.

Nostromo – Gom Jabbar (1979)

In the same vein, Nostromo also committed this.

An “edit” that actually cloaks its origins: it’s not fair Mr. Menace.

doc powerhouse – mountain funk

Okay, it’s a version of a Grieg tune so the image should show a Norwegian scene but a South Seas / Tiki volcano is hotter than a fjord.

YMO Tribute

3 great tracks, from different eras and in different styles, covering some Yellow Magic Orchestra‘s tracks (see here).

Greg Phillinganes – Behind The Mask (1985)
Reportedly, this specific tune was once thought to be included in Michael Jackson‘s Off The Wall but it didn’t end up that way. The album keyboard player, G. Phillinganes, resang the vocal part and ultimately used it for a record of his own.

Disco Tic

An alternative version of Lazer – Windsurfing (see here) and this time sung in Italian. In fact, this rendition appears to be the original version – or draft.

Nothing really outstanding about this specific song, and, as a matter of fact, the voice almost ruins the great instrumental.

The Ultimate Warlord

A bit weaker IMHO than the original or The Immortals‘ version, but really enjoyable though.
