Meteor Man

The Hiltonaires – Meteon Man

You know the concept vol. 2: Take a cheap looking compilation album from the late 70s with very little info about anything. You might find a surprisingly fresh version of a classic. The great original was featured on the blog earlier. This one comes from an album: Hits For The Young People 18. Released in Germany, year unknown.

Suoraan Taivaalta

Mona Carita – Suoraan Taivaalta (1979)

Remake of Sarah Brightman & Hot Gossip ‎– (I Lost My Heart To A) Starship Trooper in the language of Jussi and Anssi.
Quite forgettable, except for the singer, who was really a looker. Now she weights way more than on the picture FYI.
Her first tracks – written by Kunze, were a bit better: look for Cissy – Taas, Taas (and its B-side as well) on Youtube… but only if you’re ready to overlook the ridiculous choruses.

Let The Sunshine In

United Singers – The Flesh Failures (Let The Sunshine In)

Taxi – Let The Sunshine In

Swedish disco versions of  a classic Hair-tune. In the picture Tampereen Popteatteri promoting the first Finnish Hair production in 1969. Taxi has saved me a few times from an aggressive crowd wanting to hear something more danceable i.e. familiar.

Olympiada-80

“Living Sound”  is a soul/gospel band from USA, travelled throughout the former Communist Bloc and countries of 3rd world as well. They visited USSR in 1980 and recorded a cover of  the anthem of forthcoming Moscow’s Olympic Games.

Living Sound – Olympiada-80

Here’s original version of the song, performed by Estonian Tõnis Mägi (filmed in Tallinn, in 1980)

Magic Carpet Ride

1979_Citroen_CX_intBuffalo – Magic Carpet Ride

Thanks for the invitation – it’s an honor to be in! My first post combines two of my favorite addictions from which I never wish to be cured: obscure disco vinyls and the impossibly seductive interior of the first generation Citroën CX. Connoisseurs designer classic is ready to take you for a magic carpet ride. Soundtrack provided by Buffalo (featuring Peter Vee) with a dancefloor friendly version of a Steppenwolf classic.

Nüüd On Mul Muusika

Laine – Nüüd On Mul Muusika (1979)

A Soviet band singing Patrick Juvet’s I Love America? Yep, it did happen …except that the lyrics were a bit …tweaked. Obviously.

Chrisma – U (1977)

Démis Roussos’ I Dig You on Ketamine. Sort of.

It’s this band (Amore is such a track), but also that that one.

Dan Lacksman’s Pop Corn

Oh no! I hear you say. Not yet another Pop Corn rehash… But IMO this one is way better than the others. The drum kicks in like hell and the Moog is played gritty and dirty.

Although no one is credited on the album I’m sure the author is Dan Lacksman (from TransVolta, and, obviously, Telex fame): all the “fillers” are actually tracks from his Electronic System project.

Still I’m Sad

First there were The Yardbirds with 1965’s “Still I’m Sad” – 1st goth song ever (as some believe).

Boney M. made its heartfelt version in 1977.

But we took hairy & marasmic hard-rock cover made by Ritchie Blackmore’s hand (1975). Fantastic cowbell work turns it into sparkling funk-rock stick of dynamite.

Elephant Funk

La Mama – Elephant Funk (1982)

Now, if you switch the chorus line from “Let’s do the elephant funk” to “I am the disco machine” you’ve got the following track, which is slightly better IMO: (more…)

Space Factory

Space Factory – Space Dance
Determined, severely minimalistic bleeps from France, 1978. I’ll be discussing this kind of forgotten sounds during my interview for the Swedish television on the 20th. They are filming in London, Frankfurt and Stockholm, and the program will apparently be sold to all of Europe. Keep your eyes open. – Of course, I’ll be promoting Overfitting at every given change.

As Loose As The Eurostoxx

vaalate-81498367684736847681768

An old DJ set I’ve dug up from a dusty hard drive, most likely recorded in late 2008 (hence this curious name.) I don’t recall the set being aired on the webradio, nor mixing it, but I’m defo proud of it upon listening to it now.

Big fat warning: if you can’t stand unlikely mashups, bits of eurodance and chiptunes here and there, loads of italo disco covers with huge sawtooth waves, please don’t listen to it. This post does really deserve its ‘wtf?’ tag.

Magic Fly Vocal

jtm-98686468164

A long, long time ago, Jussi posted the terrific B side of this record. But the A side is also a very powerful song!

Joyce – Try Me (1977)

I’m sure you know that this is actually a cover version of Magic Fly, so no need to mention it 🙂

El Cóndor Pasa

Back In Time – El Condor Pasa (If I Could) (1978)

The least I can say is that this mixture of genres is … surprising – maybe a bit sloppy too, but what did you expect playing a Peruvian flute on top of a disco beat.
