Halloween

diamanda

Halloween

The veil between the living and the dead is thinnest at Samhain, the original Halloween when hills ran red with the blood of children and animals. Here now are dark and depressing dance songs to put you into that original spirit for the coming night, music about the living dead, pestilence, drugs, despair and madness. First up is naturally Diamanda Galas herself whose works include recordings The Litanies of Satan and The Divine Punishment, as well as the book The Shit of God, published in 1996.

The Ray’s Tender Touch

death_ray_005

Argo – The Ray’s Tender Touch

Soviet Union topographical acoustic engineer Arseny Avraamov proposed to build powerful electro-acoustic systems that could be installed on aeroplanes, so that vast areas of land could be covered with sound.
This 1983 track by Lithuanian group Argo – here at 45 rpm – would have made for a perfect tune to force everyone to dance, from Irkutsk to the collective farms outside Vilnus. If they say you party, you party!

Locomotive Breath

cat gang challengerCat Gang – Locomotive Breath

That bass kicks like a 528 Hemi with mechanical roller cam and individual throttle bodies. So who cares about a luggage rack option or painfully pretensions poses, when burnouts are available anytime you want. Please do remember to check an even more equally impressive version Jussi posted about 3 billion years ago.

Mondgesicht

mondgesichtOrchester Ambros Seelos – Mondgesicht

Is there anything more beautiful than late August with these dark, warm and damp nights filled with tempting tobacco smoke. The great strange dream called summer is slowly fading away. As the overtly quoted On The Road phrase goes: “We were all delighted, we all realized we were leaving confusion and nonsense behind and performing our one and noble function of the time, move“.

Octagon

onyxOnyx – Octagon

Der Alte was a childhood favorite for many drop-out teens like me. Mostly because there was nothing else available on Finnish television. Even thought I watched too many episodes, I can’t remember this cosmic moment from the episode “Kalt wie Diamant” (Germany, 1983).

Emerald Forest

Junior Homlich – Emerald Forest End Titles / Eagle Break

John Boorman, the director of Point Blank, Zardoz and Deliverance, goes soft with a heavily didactic film about a father seeking his son in the Amazon jungle. Instead of encounters with gutmunching cannibals the film is concerned with the earth’s ecological balance, preserving the life of the rain forest and yes, the process of growing up to be a man.

The music works, though.

Azteca

Zorro – Azteca

Austrian space disco from an (to me anyway) unknown artist. This could very well look like a small private pressing, but the label (Rst records) have released too many records for it to qualify as private. A big surprise however is that it’s from ’86. I would have guessed 77/78 if i didn’t knew better. Anyway it’s a really cool track

(I Like) Sado-Music

Sandy Samuel – (I like) Sado-Music

I didn’t even know it was a genre. But now that i know, i like it too!
Sandy Samuel kicks off a terrifying groovy track with an insisting chanting of how much she likes to whip the shit out of you. The drumming is also kind of fascinating. Don’t know if the drummer didn’t wanted a click to play along or maybe he just thought tightness was overrated. In that case i agree (on this tune anyway). You can hear the full version on my latest mix

Claire Evren – Müzik ve Ben

To my surprise Vomatron didn’t post this one. So let me introduce this Turkish/French disco wonder from ’81. To my knowledge Claire was a Turkish singer living in France. The track is produced in France, but only released on the turkish Öncü label (the one that looks like a redbull logo). The lyrics are in french except the chorus which is turkish. What a blend!
