Bob-A-Rela

70s-dancing.jpg Hehe, I have absolutely no info regarding this band and their one and only album from 1979.
These are actually samples from Blackberry’s record and she forgot(? lazy you!) to post em up here.

Tracey In My Room

hotel-room.jpg

Much hyped when released as a bootleg in 2000, this track was actually done by Ben Watt from the Everything But The Girl fame but under cover. It then went legit soon after and even published as a plain EBTG’s remix. I still love that song from the first time I heard it.

It comprises the acappella from Everything But The Girl – Wrong and the instrumental part of Sandy Rivera – Come Into My Room (Take It Back Mix) – a Soul Vision remix, hence the name of the bootleg.

C’est La Vie

Yet another off topic ticket but I really couldn’t resist. Though I’m no fan of Martin Solveig, this remix is THE sh%t!

Anthemic French House with maximum distortion. I love those f%cking beets!

Martin Solveig – C’est la vie (The Bloody Beetroots Remix) (2008)

Thanks to Kidz By Colette for sharing this exclusive track. Soon to be released on the next Solveig’s album.

Knightlife

midevil-knight-deluxe-plus.JPG

Seriously, he is one of the very few to have brought out a perfect blend of synthpop, french house and ‘distortion-knob’ electro; and yes: Knightlife is as good as it gets.

He is also quite new on the scene and surely someone to eagerly watch out for in the future. I discovered his work out of sheer luck and now I must admit I’m totally hooked on his sound.

Au Paradis

2uf4mpu.jpg

Originally released in 1982 on Chagrin D’Amour‘s only album, it is one of those tracks meant to make love to: repetitive patterns, funky riff and spoken words of a couple in the background.

Sadly, the song is really too short to be appreciated to its full extent and, as such, Loud-E did a perfect job extending the original 2 minutes and a half to a mere 6 minutes long cut (who said it is still too little ;)).

Chagrin D’Amour – Au Paradis (LoudEfied Edit) (2007)

It appears that this track has been wrongly attributed to LoudEfied alone when it was first aired on the CBS Top 100 show.

Just for fun, here are the roughly translated (and silly) lyrics, from French to English:

Grégory : Tell me « apple »
Valli : « apple… apple »
Grégory : once more…
Valli : « apple »… it’s good !
Grégory : the apple ?

Chorus : Don’t say a word you know that, we can’t believe it
No more words you know that, it’s better this way (x2)

Valli : I can’t believe it ?
Grégory : hush…
Valli : What about : « hush » ?
Grégory : Just because : hush !
Valli : Because I can’t believe it ?
Grégory : Don’t say a word…
Valli : But…
Grégory : No no, no more words : hush !

Disco Dream And The Androids

a-161269-001-1.jpg

Disco Dream And The Androids is a one-shot band that released only one LP, in 1979, but what a record! I let you appreciate the array of skills of the British duo by yourself…

Philharmony

Philarmony is a great experimental LP, full of pulsating Ambient keyboard hooks and with a very welcome exotic touch for every westerner. It’s been released in 1982 by the head man behind the incredible Yellow Magic Orchestra, but as a solo project from end to end.

The sample in preview is really mesmerizing and sounds quite surprisingly ‘modern’ for its age.

Haruomi Hosono – Platonic

More on YMO in a forthcoming ticket, soon.

Lady Bug

1013-pink-ladybug2.jpg
A smashing track from the band comprised of most members of The Universal Robot Band and the Phreek original crews. It is a sort of sequel to the highly enjoyable Love Bug song released two years before.

The non-sense lyrics are quite cheesy but also fun in a sense.

Bumblebee Unlimited – Lady Bug (1978)

As a rule of thumb, there is always at least one Disco House cover available. This one is fairly up-tempo:

Zombie!

zombie.jpg

That’s a fact, I’m a Fabio Frizzi (living?) dead fanboy. I’ve already posted about my true fascination towards his work a few months ago, but I couldn’t stop just there. Frizzi has scored Lucio Fulci‘s so-called Living Dead trilogy from A to Z and only one of these three impressive themes has been previously presented in these pages. Now I hope the mistake is properly corrected.

The first track is probably his most famous score and can be heard in the movie Zombi 2 while the second one, which is a variation on the same theme, is used in Paura nella città dei morti viventi.

Fabio Frizzi & Giorgio Tucci – Zombie (1979)

Fabio Frizzi – Apoteosi Del Mistero (1980)

Of course, I could not decently post on the subject without mentioning the splendid tribute produced by Legowelt to one of the greatest masters of the Horror soundtrack genre.

Space Woman

168-image_large.jpg

This very groovy track’s been first released with the Herman’s Rocket moniker, then under the Venus Gang guise a few years later; but don’t be fooled, it’s really the exact same song. Whatever its name, the bassline is quite hypnotic.

Herman’s Rocket / Venus Gang – Space Woman (1977 / 1981)

Interesting trivia, this is in fact a ‘spacey’ cover version of a funky song released only one year earlier.

Robotnick

50s_ads_042.jpg

Released on the excellent Ce n’est qu’un début EP, this track builds a very disctinctive and retro-futurist aesthetic that sounds like no other Synthpop productions of that era. IMO a true gem that has not lost any of its appeal since its initial release.

As a noted bonus, the whispered vocals perfectly fit in the atmosphere created by the instrumental part.

Hands In The Dark

watwiljevanmeqz5.jpg

Produced in 2005 but only properly released in 2007 by the dark italo ‘revivalist’ record label Italians Do It Better, Hands In The Dark is a cool track to relish on headphones. A perfect mood enhancer.

Chromatics – Hands In The Dark

It is in fact a kind of strange and unlikely mashup:
the lyrics and the melody are originally from
R.L. Crutchfield’s Dark Day – Hands In The Dark (1979)

while the instrumental part is sampled from
Chromium – Caribbean Air Control (1979)

Fairly enjoyable piece of music, nothing outstanding though but I like the bassline.

This one is simply awesome, the main chorus is so entertaining.

It’s been released quite confidentially in 1979 on Infinity Records. From the fantastic LP Star To Star. Enjoy.

Face To Face

blgal875.jpg

Maybe the best known tune from the German pop band The Twins, a simple and naive melody you simply can’t forget.

The Twins – Face To Face – Heart To Heart (1982)

Shy Rose re-used the melodic line a few years later in what became in turn her greatest hit:

Shy Rose – I Cry For You (1987)

Another fine example of the appeal of this melody can be heard in a rather House-ish song from the mid-nineties:

Mozaic – Rays Of The Sun (Electric Beach Mix) (1996)

Please keep me posted if you happen to know a song using this melodic pattern and released before The Twins’ version.
